We had the good fortune of connecting with Norberto Perez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Norberto, what do you think makes you most happy? Why?
Painting makes me happy, it has become such an important part of my life that it’s hard to imagine going through the day without it being present. Painting helps me explore the world and understand it better. When in the act of painting either indoors or outdoors it feels like my senses are heightened. Colors that I wouldn’t see on a normal day suddenly appear, and the sounds of people and conversations also become more apparent. I become still and aware of a world that seems to be moving fast. Painting has also reinforced lessons that can be applied to other things.
Consistency will improve your painting. Challenging yourself with something difficult may not always work but you will learn something from it and with time overcome it giving you a rewarding feeling. The reasons can go on forever but these are some of the reasons painting brings joy to my life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I do a variety of things, from painting from life to illustrating fiction. My Images are created using traditional materials to have spontaneity in my mark-making that I enjoy seeing. I continue to paint and draw from life which Is one of my greatest assets built over the years. Using what I explore from life I use later on in my illustrations to create scenes that feel believable. I’m excited to continue to experience more of the world through painting and see what new stories I can bring to life visually.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

If I had a best friend visiting I would take them to see some art. A visit to The Met would be great as it’s a large museum with many important pieces of art to look at. The museum also happens to be located in Central Park. You go from a structured crowded indoor space to open grass fields and a variety of abstract terrain. At times after seeing such amazing paintings in the museum I feel inspired to draw and paint outdoors so Central Park is also perfect for that. For food, I would prefer to go to Queens as it is filled with a variety of foods that are more affordable.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Shoutout to The Art Students League of New York. I have studied painting there since high school and have met amazing Instructors and artists for the past 7 years. I would have never picked up a brush and painted with the same confidence if I never stepped foot in that place.
