We had the good fortune of connecting with Norris Dorsey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Norris, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Initially, I started my business as a case study. I was teaching business courses at a few local community colleges and wanted my students to make real world connections to the things we were discussing in class. Reading about businesses in a textbook is ok, but watching me start and run my business in real life was much more powerful. They were able to learn the process of starting a business, how to run it, and how to maintain it as I went through the process of filing paperwork, creating financial statements, and dong all the day to day tasks of running my business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Dorsey Academy of Entrepreneurs was started in 2014. We believe that the best way to become a successful entrepreneur is through mentorship and education. Not everyone chooses the 4-year path, and for those who dream of entrepreneurship without the costs associated with a business degree, we are here to educate and guide them to success. We teach practical, real-world content, that equips entrepreneurs with the knowledge they need to effectively manage and grow their businesses.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My current favorite hangout is the Breakfast Club in Hollywood, on Vine near Sunset. Every first Sunday, there’s a nice day party/brunch mixer , hosted by LA Biz Guy, where I sit out on the patio, have a cigar, and enjoy the company of great people.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my dad John Lee and one of my mentors, Dr. Robert Ross.
