We had the good fortune of connecting with Oba Vita and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Oba, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
When you truly believe in your creation it’s important to always remember what motivated you from the beginning and hold that dear….I personally encountered plenty of times on my journey that I felt a need to pause for a moment, to get my second wind and that’s ok….Never think that whatever your path is when creating something special, that it has to be the one that’s continuous without  road blocks. Pause if you have to, catch your breath…Because maybe in that moment you you will see what you’re doing with fresh eyes.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My earliest memories have been those of entertaining and performing with my family. We’re known as “THE AMAZING VITAS” The First African American Family of Circus Acrobats…When I was 6 years old we were fortunate enough to travel with Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey Circus in the early 80’s. Growing up as a performer, prepared me for what I am doing now. After years in this business we’re finally bringing my family’s story to the big screen as a tv show titled “THE AMAZING VITAS”. The tv series is based in the early 80’s and follows my parents and their four sons as they navigate leaving suburban, Chicago Heights Illinois to travel with “The Greatest Show On Earth!”

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely Venice beach! I have so many magical memories there as a kid! My family use to street perform on the boardwalk when I was a kid….This is during a time where street art was exciting and popular. There was, and still is so many great vendors in Venice, whether food, clothes, handcrafted art, you name it Venice has it.
Being I have always been athletic ,I would have to take anyone visiting on one of the many hiking trails in LA. Runyon Canyon or maybe Fryman Canton…And you can’t visit LA without stopping by Capoeira Brasil at 10875 W. Washington blvd. in Culver City to catch a class with Mestre Boneco and Formado Axé!

I love the food in LA whether it’s Vivian’s Millennial Cafe, for breakfast or Hilltop Cafe on Slauson Ave. & a special shout-out to Chace and Harun Coffee, 4336 Degnan Blvd. in Leimert Park.. And Absolutely for an Cultural Experience, with music, djembe drummers, drum circle, dance, vendors of all kinds, music, and community history, there is nothing like Leimert Park on the weekends.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I believe one of the most important factors in any form of success is mentorship. This is something I value more than anything. My family plays a big role in supporting my journey but I also feel it’s important to have good mentors whether they’re hands on or by far. I personally have learned a lot from people I look up to even when I have never met them. I feel that, in whatever it is you’re doing down the road to success it takes trial and error. As well as studying not only your mistakes, but learning from them. I value being able to call one of my mentors for advice even, if after talking with them I decide to go another route. The point is to have council.
