We had the good fortune of connecting with Obari Cartman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Obari, Let’s talk about principles and values – what matters to you most?
I love this question, even though it’s difficult to choose one value, I like the question because my work is very principle driven. I am always thinking about the meaning of the opportunities I accept. Money is probably the least of my motivators. I’d almost rather no attention. So what’s left is impact, and joy and integrity. If i had to pick one value that encompasses them all, it is posterity. I want my work to have a lingering impact. I want something I do now to matter in a meaningful way to my children’s children. I dont have to get credit for it, but I want their life to be better, fuller, more robust, more interesting, safer, more peaceful, more exciting, and more just, because of something I do today.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I approach my work in mental health more as an artist than a professional. It’s more personal than business. More creative than prescriptive. I love integrating art, culture, movement and community into wellness work. It’s challenging in a fun way. I enjoy the unpredictable dynamics of working with people, it allows to me to be in a constant state of discovery and curiosity. I’ve learned to cherish the moments, to savor the intricacies of it all. Healing becomes less of a goal and more of a lifestyle that way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love finding new places where artists are creating authentically. I love all types of live music, spoken word, comedy, and dance. I also love being outside, around nature, or somewhere where I can do some good people watching.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
