We had the good fortune of connecting with Ocean Ronquillo-Morgan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ocean, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
We found a problem in the college apparel market… Many of the merchandise didn’t reflect the diverse cultures, styles, and interests of our campuses; especially our affinity for streetwear. So we started Geistwear by catering to the popular “hypebeast” mentality, ‘70s aesthetics obsession, and other Gen-Z values like sustainability and social awareness… And now, we’re on a mission to modernize the college apparel industry.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Geistwear, we support and employ student designers and entrepreneurs. We also want to make a voice. We don’t want to just sell a commoditized product. We want to have every single thing that we release resonate with the student community — whether it’s the entrepreneurial community or for people of color, like us. Plus, we have sustainability in mind… We’re looking into adding 100% recycled cotton and hemp t-shirts to our product line, and using less packaging overall. Together, we’re building a more sustainable future. The journey hasn’t always been easy. As entrepreneurs, we deal with rejection, betrayal, and setbacks. But we have a certain tenacity in our blood that lets us push through with sheer willpower where others may otherwise give up. It’s a blessing to turn our dreams into a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly… Taking a drive down PCH Highway and Malibu! Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
