We had the good fortune of connecting with Ok Coop and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ok Coop, what’s your definition for success?
To me, living a life that is fulfilling and healthy is success. Keeping all the promises that you make to yourself and not compromising your joy and health. Doing what you love, no matter what that is. Everyone’s idea of success is different but I feel like we all have an innate sense of knowing whether we love what we are doing in life or not. If you love what you are doing, you’ve won!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a music producer, songwriter and artist. Me and my artist Whookilledkenny have a collective named Pay The Fee and you can listen to our music on some of the biggest rap playlists on Spotify and Apple Music. I just recently produced a project with an amazing artist and person Tsola. Her voice and style is one of a kind and I cant wait to keep creating with her as well. I have several other projects I’m producing for artists as my vision has always been to work closely with artists and build their sound. Also, look out for some solo Ok Coop music soon too.

As far as my story, I have been making music literally my whole life, starting when I got my first drum set for Christmas when I was four-years old. I was a percussionist in band in middle school, on the drum line in high school and studied music for a couple years in college. I remember around my middle school years I started to fall in love with the production of the music that I would listen to. It was the production from Timbaland, Pharrell and Kanye that made me want to be a music producer. Thus, my mind was made up very early on that that was what I wanted to do in life.

Pursuing that dream of mine has been a challenge but not because “making it” as a music producer is difficult. Really the challenge has come from keeping the faith and patience to believe that I can do anything that my mind is set on. I got my first MacBook in 2012 for college and started making beats on it constantly. I would make beats all the time, to the point where I stopped going out and would just go to class and then hang out with musicians and making music. I stuck through college though, had a great time, graduated and then realized I need to take music serious.

After college I traveled the country for a few years winning beat battles and meeting amazing people but it took me a few years before I finally had the courage to move out of my home state of Texas. It was one of the best decisions of my life as I’ve grown so much from living in Atlanta and now Los Angeles. I always knew some of the leaps of faith I needed to take but I would hesitate. I’ve learned that fear and doubt are the number one factors in stunting the vision that God has for you. Have the audacity to take a chance!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a great question. I would take my friend to Point Dume in Malibu to catch some secluded beach vibes, then hit Quarters for some Korean BBQ. If they are in to thrifting like myself, we could go to Pasadena and hit two of my favorite spots, Crossroads Trading Post and 2nd Street. For night life, we could hit either of my two favorite parties in Los Angeles. Familar Faces and Please and Thank You. Both of which are thrown by my friends from Texas. And lastly, we gotta hit The Laugh Factory for some live comedy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I always have to give a shoutout to my parents. They have been the most constant source of support and love throughout my journey in life. Hands down, my favorite people in the world and I love them dearly. They gave me a Godly foundation and as business picks up in the entertainment industry, your foundation and who you are as a person begins to get challenged more and more. I thank them for always reminding me to be myself and be the influencer, not the one being influenced.
