Meet Olivia Janisch | Cofounder, SuperBrand

We had the good fortune of connecting with Olivia Janisch and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olivia, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
1 – Breathwork – it’s like performance training for your brain. It also rewires the way you deal with stress so when shit gets real, ie you lose a deal, talent goes somewhere else, you’re in a disagreement, etc, you have the mental capacity to stay calm and present, and look for solutions instead of competing with drama.
2 – Having a strong sense of curiosity – I am super curious, and I’m constantly learning from people around me, clients, partners etc. It helps you see things from a different perspective, and gives you an edge when it comes to communicating your unique value and selling your ideas through because when you’re curious you can learn your audience, better understand who you’re up against, and uncover what people need to hear to connect with you. Because I’m constantly traveling for work to art fairs, conferences, and meetings, arriving with a sense of curiosity makes every situation a learning opportunity which creates a strong intrinsic sense of motivation and joy for me.
3 – Good humor – it’s easy to get bogged down with all the nuances of building a business, plus life and the world in general. Studies show that laughter actually increases your ability to be creative, so not only is it a stress release in tough situations, laughing helps you find ways of showing up with better solutions and strategies for moving forward.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
SuperBrand was built to bring agency quality branding to entrepreneur and founder led businesses. Gil Nevo, my cofounder, was an animator on south park for ten years and then produced and creative directed for big brands including Ben & Jerry’s and Coca Cola. I’ve worked with legacy brands for almost ten years as well, but we both have a big passion for entrepreneurs who are challenging the status quo.
We work with a lot of technical founders who are great at what they do, but don’t know how to tell the right story about it, and that’s where we come in. We’re most excited about working with people who are building products or businesses to fix big problems in their industry, or innovating in ways that have never been done before. We love working with people who see things differently, have a growth mindset and are innovating to make meaningful change.
We launched right before covid hit, so we’ve been innovating since the early days. We had no idea what the future would hold for businesses, so we spent our first 2 years adjusting our offering, our own brand, and the kind of clients we go after. I don’t believe that building a business is easy, ever. But it’s like having a kid, it’s worth it. The growth, the passion, the breakthroughs – it’s all worth it, you just gotta be willing to go with the flow, adjust, modify, and constantly remind yourself of your why. I also love having a partner in it – we strategize together, win together, and lose together, and most importantly we laugh our asses off every once in a while which helps keep everything in perspective.
What do I want the world to know about our story? What a question! I suppose I want people to know that we do amazing work, we help people move into the next phase of their business through foundational strategy and messaging, and solve a lot of business development pain points. The process is fun, efficient, and incredibly powerful. And we are a blast to work with.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love this city so much. I grew up in London and I travel constantly to see family and for work, and I am always so grateful to be able to come home to LA. There is so much history and culture in this city, and each neighborhood is its own microcosm of creativity, flavor and fun. The first place that comes to mind is the Getty – it’s one of my favorite places in the world. From the trolley up, to the marble steps, to the incredible collections, the gardens, and the energy of the location, it always leaves me refreshed and inspired. I live in Santa Monica, so I love doing oysters and rose at Blue Plate Oysterette on Ocean. I worked there in my 20s, and it still feels like family to me. The owner, Jen Rush, started a wine bar and vintage clothing shop (she’s so cool) on Montana Ave, that’s fun to peruse, and after I’d head to Casa Cu just down the way to look at the beautiful handmade ceramics and houseware they import from Uruguy, Colombia, and beyond. I love taking visitors to Venice Beach because you never know what you’re going to see, and I love surprises. I practice breathwork at an amazing studio there called Open, where I love bringing people for yoga or meditation. It’s truly a healing center, with an amazing team running it all. I always follow it up with a pain au chocolat and a flat white from Gjusta Grocer, or if we’re looking for something more substantial we head to Great White for their infamous breakfast burrito. Most of my closet is thrifted, so I love going to the Melrose Trading post to look for vintage t shirts, denim, and bomber jackets. Night Market on Sunset in Silverlake is one of my favorite places to show out of towners, and Shortstop or the Virgil is great for a little boogie to cap it all off. I could write 5 essays on the gems around LA, but those are the first that come to mind. Roger Room & Jones are also classics for me.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Caroline Gomez – when we first met working in post production, she kicked my ass daily and made me work so hard. Before I could see the big picture, I was like, who is this lady?! She was also incredibly kind and supportive, and it was this rare combination that equipped me with the skills and confidence to do things I’d never dreamt of doing.
