We had the good fortune of connecting with Omar Walrus and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Omar, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Theres that cliche saying, “the biggest risk is not taking the risk at all”. I’d say that stands true. I like the idea of chasing risk, chasing whats uncomfortable for the chance at the opportunity to grow. Personally, I decided to jump and risk my stable and consistent job in 2021. I quit to chase my dreams. I didn’t know exactly what was next but I embraced the uncertainty. If I were to fail then I would fail greatly; if that makes sense. I’d pick myself back up and try again. But right after I quit I got to work on a live recording with one of the Cheetah Girls, Adrienne Bailon, and her husband, Israel Houghton. It was for Israels Project LA: Alive in Los Angeles. It was that experience that confirmed my decision and gave me a sense of being on the right path. I felt truly alive being with them and the crew. Since then I’ve been able to go on a U.S. tour with Jany Green, opening up for Walk the Moon. If I hadn’t quit my job I don’t think those opportunities would have presented themselves to me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the things I love about music is the ability it has to set the atmosphere and connect with the listener. With that in mind I’m super proud of the work I’ve done with the artist, Heaven Luna. I had the privilege of producing and co-writing her first two singles, Don’t Want U and Azul. Both paint a story of love, heartbreak and woman independence. While at the same time setting a soothing soundscape of melodic piano/guitars that’ll have you singing along as you drive along the PCH coast. She’s an incredible artist, songwriter and an incredible friend.
What excites me most is the chance to create with friends and build genuine relationships. I value authenticity and genuine connection which I believe sets the perfect environment to be free and create.
There was a lot of trial and error getting to where I can be confident in my production skills. To be honest, there’s still so much to learn. But i’m lucky to have talented friends that can help give me great feedback. More often than not when I hate something I’ve made, my friends end up liking it. So i’ve learned not to completely dismiss my creations.
Like a lot of things in life, I’ve learned not to force things and to let go. Not to force the end result I have in my mind but to just let the art sort of create itself in a sense. I’ll start with an idea and follow it. I’ll let it lead me. If I end up not liking the finished product then I let it go and am free to start over. I’m not married to a single idea if that makes sense.
I want the world to know that in whatever we are going through, you are never alone. We are all in this planet together, at this moment in time. We are all connected. I want to create music that connects to people. From my heart to yours.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Definitely starting with food. I’d take them to the east side for some street tacos, tamales and pupusas. If they want to get a little fancy we can hit up my favorite restaurant, Bacari or Malibu Farms. Bacari has my favorite atmosphere and Mailbu Farms is next to the ocean with incredible views. For activities I’d take them to all the dope museums like The Getty Museum, Getty villa, LACMA and The Broad to name a few. Can’t miss out on Disneyland either.
Basically the week would consist of food, museums, Malibu and Disneyland. Pretty eventful I’d say.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Definitely; there’s no way we could do this alone. There’s been a long list of people in my life that have steered me in the right direction or showed some love, support etc. Shout out to Josiah Bell, Jon Jackson and Josh Valle who most definitely help shape the musician, producer and friend I wanted to be. They were all apart of my start in this industry, always invited me to their sessions and taught me a lot.
