We had the good fortune of connecting with Flavia Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Flavia, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Perseverance, do it yourself & the path of least resistance

There are so many no’s in this industry. So many road blocks and bumps along the way. So many times you may want to give up, but don’t give in!!! Keep going, pivot, find the next path with some kind of opening and see what happens.

Throughout my music career I have constantly been met with some sort of challenge that I had to overcome. When I couldn’t find the right music producers for my music, I taught myself how to produce. This led to me creating some of my best songs, work and co-producing all my own music. When I couldn’t find the right manager to bring on board, I learned the business inside and out and managed myself for several years. This was invaluable. Knowledge is power. Especially in a business that preys on your innocence and naivety. When I couldn’t hire a full band because it was too costly, I developed a one woman show where I play synth and trigger drum samples. I can now tour as a one woman band and say yes to any of the performance opportunities I’d like.

Do I always want to do everything on my own? NO. But the point is that I can. And if I can then nobody can stop me! Since then I’ve found the most wonderful team, and creatives to support me but that time in between allowed me to learn and develop all the tools I needed to be successful. This DIY approach helped me grow, be more independent in my work, more empowered through this independence and successful at my craft and in my business.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart is how much I think outside the box. I’m so curious and playful and I’m always trying new things. Trial and error is such a beautiful way to learn and explore yourself. Whether you land a jackpot idea or fall flat on your face, if you’re having fun, staying true to yourself and you’re learning what works and what doesn’t, then it’s a win win in my book. I think mistakes are really underrated. Sometimes they’re the most valuable lessons, turning points and moments of growth.

yay mistakes!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
OH MY GOD. My team is so. amazing I am so unbelievably grateful. I think since much of my story is about the struggle of finding the right partners, and having to do so much of it on my own for so long, it made finding the right team that much more special to me.

Ryan mothaf*ing Vaughn. My manager. My absolute #1. This dude goes above and beyond for me in ways I never imagined possible. He works so hard, believes in me, and has stuck with me from so early on. I am forever grateful to him and count my lucky stars that our paths aligned. Love you Ry!!!!

Deprise Brazel. My music lawyer. Deprise is such a badass, a ray of sunshine and at this point a wonderful friend. Finding the people that believe in you and have stuck with you before all the “hype” is so important and helps build such a bond and level of trust. She’s my forever girl!

Basil Mironer, owner of Mirage Studio and my creative partner on all things visuals: music videos, single artwork, album covers, live show projections. Basil has been making art with me for years. As an indie artist working with low budgets, sometimes it’s hard to pull off the scope of all that you’re imagining, but it feels like with Basil anything is possible.
