We had the good fortune of connecting with Orin Torati and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Orin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My artistic career stemmed out of an early obsession and passion for music videos, animations, and comics as a child. This continued growing over time, through a consistently growing affinity for music, fashion, and spatial design, which I pursued through studying architecture further in life. During that time, I gathered a plethora of skills and knowledge on design, not only spatial but more general.

Although there has been and will always be a passion for spatial design, I wanted to steer away from the typical route a lot of architects take and not focus all my energy on designing buildings. Which mostly translates into less creative practice and more bureaucratic work. By then, my work also headed more in the direction of fitting in the art and entertainment space, with a lot of conceptual and visual pieces being at the premise of my career and that being the work I enjoyed doing the most. It became clear to me that finding my place in a fully creative environment that allowed me to act as a multi-disciplinary artist was adamant to enjoy my career trajectory.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a creative director, and 3D artist specializing in worldbuilding, animation, visual storytelling, and a blend of live-action and CGI I get the chance to work on various projects spanning from spatial design to film, music, and fashion. By existing at the intersection of design and fiction, I am committed to pushing boundaries by creatively exploiting technologies to craft revolutionary aesthetics and narratives which sets me apart from other artists/creatives. A background in Architecture, combined with the technical skillset of your usual 3D artists makes me a creative that thinks and uses these technologies differently than others. Thinking outside of the box and the creative misuse of technologies has always been a strong precedent for my creative practice

Besides that, I get to stay on top of any new technologies and stay fluent in a multitude of software due to my role as adjunct faculty at SCI-Arc’s Fiction and Entertainment postgraduate program, where I guide students both through conceptual and technical directions.

Being a multidisciplinary creative has its struggles, but I can always account for three of my closest friends and fellow filmmakers and designers with who I co-founded RAWx, a creative studio dedicated to speculative worldbuilding where we manage various pipelines within various sections of the entertainment industry.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
During the almost three years of living in Los Angeles, I’ve gotten the chance to explore tons of amazing spots in the city. For one, I would start the day by visiting some of the wonderful museums in the city, such as the Broad, the Getty, and Lacma. If we’re around Lacma, we might as well walk down Fairfax Boulevard and pass through Brain Dead Studios to check out their shop, and backyard patio or maybe even catch a movie! Besides that, I would also take a chance at checking out some stores on Melrose Ave.

Another great combination of spots to go check out are Silver Lake and Echo Park. If you don’t mind a walk you could start up in Echo Park with a nice stroll through the park, after which I’d propose to go and grab some breakfast at Clark Street Bakery. From there on out, I’d suggest going to check out Stories Bookstore on Sunset Boulevard. From there on out you could continue along Sunset Boulevard towards Silver Lake or go and grab a coffee at Stereoscope. Some other cool spots in Echo Park are Bar Flores, Bacetti, and Little Joy Cocktail Bar.

If you’re heading down to Silver Lake, I’d suggest checking out the following spots for lunch/dinner: Baccari and Pine & Crane. Recently Wasteland opened up a new shop in Silver Lake that I’d recommend to go and check out! At the end of the night, you could go to Black Cat bar or even go and check out Zebulon where you could run into a great concert.

One of my favorite restaurants in LA would be Barra Santos, as a person who has his roots embedded in Europe it feels like a slice of home. Barra Santos is a small Portuguese Restaurant in Cypress Hill that holds a strongly selected list of amazing dishes and an extensive wine list. In the European spirit, I would also recommend Cafe Triste in Chinatown, a cozy wine bar with an ever-changing seasonal menu. Their chef is extremely talented and creative!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are a lot of people that I would love to recommend here and I’ll do my best to not ramble on too much! First of all, the person I would need to thank for bringing me and allowing me to be where I am today is my mother, Hermine, she has always been a source of support and creative inspiration! Besides her, I also have to thank all my friends for supporting me in sticking to my guns and following my passion, which led me to come out to LA and meet a whole group of amazing peers and friends.

I originally came here to pursue a postgraduate degree, and with that, I’d like to say a huge thank you for all the guidance and mentorship I received from the team that led the Fiction and Entertainment program at SCI-Arcm consisting of Liam Young, Alexey Marfin, Andre Zakhya, and Shuruq Tramontini. They were and still are amazing mentors and friends!

From that postgraduate program, I made a whole group of amazing friends and peers! Three of which I got the opportunity to start a creative studio with, to my amazing friends Dana Shaviv, Luis Garcia Grech, and Santiago Ceballos, thank you for being an amazing source of support, and encouragement and for all the efforts you put into our studio, and above all for being an amazing group of friends.

Someone I’ve always gotten to count on is Eva Besmerti, she has always been an amazing friend and confidant on which I can count for unconditional support! Besides that, she has always been the type of person who will give an honest review on my work and say what she thinks works and what doesn’t.

As a last shoutout, I would like to thank the team I worked alongside with at Actual Objects. Rick Farin, Claire Farin, Case Miller, and Cole Daly gave me the chance to pursue my passion on a professional level and to work with amazing artists that I could’ve only dreamt of.
