We had the good fortune of connecting with Pamela Hirsch and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pamela, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Most non-profit charities dedicated to a “cause” are started because of personal experience. Baby Quest is no different. After witnessing our daughter’s long battle with infertility…years of unsuccessful attempts to conceive…..our family was blessed financially to help our daughter and son-in-law pursue gestational surrogacy..twice. Seeing their beautiful family and knowing it could not have existed without our ability to pay the astronomical costs of assisted reproduction, made me realize how many of those struggling with infertility cannot attempt to create a family…because of a lack of money. I established Baby Quest Foundation to award grants to those whose only obstacle to having children is financial. Having had experience in the “for-profit” world as an owner of a branch of The Princeton Review test prep company, I was familiar with how to run a large organization. I brought the skills I had learned in running a successful business to the non-profit arena, managing Baby Quest with attention to detail and fiscal responsibility. Maintaining a low overhead remains a key factor in preserving a large percentage of donations for grants. The comfort of working out of my home (and saving on rent) far outweighed the cosmetic advantages of having office space. The current pandemic has confirmed my decision to adopt comfort and convenience in the work place. Starting a company, whether it be a for-profit or non-profit venture, is never a sure thing. More attempts fail than succeed. Since March 2012, Baby Quest has awarded over 150 grants totaling over $2.2 million. We celebrated the birth of baby #100 in August 2020 and we anticipate at least ten more babies in the coming months.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Baby Quest awards grants for procedures associated with assisted reproduction such as egg and sperm donation, embryo donation, in vitro fertilization, and gestational surrogacy. Baby Quest has features that differentiate us from the small number of others offering infertility help. We pride ourselves on diversity, offering grants to heterosexual and same sex couples and singles. We have no geographic restrictions, other than applicants must be permanent residents of the United States. There is no fundraising component required of grant recipients and they can continue seeing the specialist of their choice. Still, there are no guarantees of success and it has taken hours of hard work and dedication to bring hope (and babies) to those who have received grants

Baby Quest awards grants twice yearly, always including a grant for present or past members of the military and a cancer grant for an applicant whose fertility was affected by cancer. I am confident that, with our impressive Board of Directors, Baby Quest will continue to provide hope in the form of financial support for infertility treatments. Every person we help validates Baby Quest’s existence and reminds me that starting the charity was well worth the effort.
It is Baby Quest’s mission to destigmatize infertility and create awareness while helping those who lack the financial ability to proceed.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Considering it’s been many months since I’ve been to a restaurant and visited with friends….it’s difficult. Given other circumstances, I would take my friend on a great walk near the beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery before finding a quiet cafe for a drink or lunch.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family most definitely….my two daughters and their spouses and my husband who has always been encouraging and supportive. My four granddaughters….three of whom are products of assisted reproduction! The Baby Quest Foundation Board of Directors. Anyone who has donated to our cause and become a volunteer to further our mission.
