Meet Parker John Phillips | Composer & ReRecording Engineer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Parker John Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Parker John, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I grew up in a music family where I started playing piano around the age of four. Through high school I was always involved in everything I could do that had to do with music. When college came around the corner I did a google search for “Best Music Colleges” and Full Sail University came up. After attending Full Sail, I learnt of Film Composing and I was hooked.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Currently today I oversee a team of engineers and I freelance full-time. My proudest moment recently was having two films I wrote music for both premier at AMC. It’s been a challenging road and I’m just excited I have the chance to share my music and my story with the world. Covid 19 was horrible for my freelance experience and more recently the writers strike has effected the work flow in my career. I feel that I have overcame both of these challenges by simply working. I tried to focus on providing directors with the best possible product I could give them, and I not only grew in my skill set but I was able to forge life long connections. The biggest lesson I have learnt is to be content in where you are. The younger me would love to be where I am right now, and though some days might feel like I haven’t worked hard enough- there are always moments that can make you feel amazing, so my advice to other creatives is, focus on what you HAVE accomplished- not what you haven’t.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I currently live in the mountains of Upstate New York just for a bit and there isn’t many landmarks, but the ones that are here… are stunning. For food there are several small business’s that have amazing food, Amici’s bar and grille has amazing authentic Italian cuisine. For night life there are some good places in downtown Binghamton like Craft & Stone Fox. As far as things to do & see, there is some breath taking scenery and hillsides most everywhere you go.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to thank my two internship mentors, Dave Chemla and Jason Strawley. In my final few moths of my degree I knew clearly what I wanted to do in the film industry, what I didn’t know was, how does my college education translate into real client work. They both taught me so much about audio post production and managing a client base that I am incredibly thank for.
