We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Normansell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, why did you pursue a creative career?
I studied art and design at college as it was always my favourite subject at school. After college I realised my main interest was fine art which I then studied at university. From my sell out degree show I was approached by several galleries so that was the beginning of my career in art. When I was younger my two greatest passions were art and music so when I was not painting I was djing.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is very unique due to the technique and materials I use. The paintings are created using gloss paint and sometimes acrylic spray paint on aluminium sheets. The portraits are made up of thousands of dots painted with a fine brush.
There are several things I’m proud of, working with the band ‘The Killers’ to create the artwork for their 2008 album Day & Age. Being photographed by David Bailey for GQ Man of the Month, and most recently working with an Emmy award winning photographer/film maker Gavin Thurston to create a portrait of Sir David Attenborough from one of his photographs and making a short film of the process.
Being an artist isn’t an easy career path and at times I’ve thought about stopping. My big break came when I was lucky enough to have one of my paintings in GQ magazine and the band ‘The Killers’ saw it. I was so glad I stuck with my passion to be an artist and over the years I’ve been very fortunate.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I used to live in Birmingham which is well known for its curry so I would take them to my favourite Indian restaurant, Lasan. The Ikon gallery is a brilliant and diverse gallery that has wonderful shows all the time. I now live in Gloucestershire which is very different to living in the city but has its own highlights. I would take them to visit one of the many picturesque Cotswold towns and villages like Lower Slaughter, Bourton on-On-The-Water or Broadway. We would walk my dog to a local pub called The Fox which has great food and an extensive choice of ales and gins. Bristol is also close by and an excellent city to visit; we would take in a music or comedy gig as music is another of my passions. London is not far away, we would visit the main sights, take in a show, visit art galleries and finish with a trip to one of the Clarendon Fine Art galleries who I show with.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my partner for supporting and encouraging me when things weren’t as good as they are now and for always being there to listen to my creative ideas and giving constructive feedback. Also the band ‘The Killers’ for giving me such a massive opportunity to create their album artwork so my art could be seen by a much wider audience.
