We had the good fortune of connecting with Paul Zappia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paul, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Growing up I was really into film scores. My iPod was full of movie soundtracks. It was fun to geek out on them and enjoy it, so I hope some kid gets to listen to my work and think the same.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My career is still young and I have eons worth of knowledge to learn, but that being said I’m very happy with what I have worked on.
What has gone really well for me is simply not saying no to work (generally). Every time I sit to write a script or compose for a score, it’s another opportunity to hone in my skills and hopefully try something new!
Also, NOTES. If someone gives me a note, I’ll take it. That’s after all what notes are for. Now, sometimes I may sit and think “geez it was better before” or sometimes the note-giver sees that too, but hey. Notes are notes!
My musical style ranges, but I’d say my willingness to work together not against each other sets me apart from some others. Generally though, other composers are great people and work hard!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Off the bat we’re hitting up Disneyland. While I’d gladly spend the whole day there listening to music and having Star Wars themed cocktails, we’re going to move on and also hit up either the Laugh Factory on Sunset or Flappers in Burbank.
I’m also throwing I a seasonal bonus: the Highland games at the Queen Mary. Watching huge people in kilts throw giant logs while drinking beer (us and probably them) is a fantastic time. 10/10 would recommend.
Truthfully, I’m a little bit of a home-body so that’s all I got, but it’s all a good time!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
