We had the good fortune of connecting with Paula Glashausser, LCSW and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Paula, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Starting a private practice had been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and I sometimes still wonder if it’s just a dream. My career as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) has been long, and the majority of my experience has been in healthcare. While working in large hospitals in metropolitan areas, I was constantly presented with a plethora of cases and gained a great deal of experience in recognizing and addressing mental health conditions and psychosocial concerns. This really allowed me to hone in on my niche, pinpoint my strengths, and identify what I enjoyed treating the most.

Supporting patients through a wide range of behavioral health needs, although short-term, confirmed my desire to start a private practice – my own business – where I could support and treat patients long-term. Being able to take the time to build rapport and trust, fully assess, treat, and dig deep with clients is truly a privilege.

Being in private practice has provided me the incredible opportunity to focus on areas and specialties that are meaningful to me, such as couples counseling and working with individuals who are struggling with relationships in their life. Human connection is such an important aspect of day-to-day life, and helping people learn how to reach and maintain meaningful and healthy relationships filled with open communication, respect, kindness, and healthy boundaries is something that continues to keep me feeling like I am living in a dream. Someone please pinch me.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My practice, Discover Your Resilience Psychotherapy, is focused on highlighting peoples’ strengths and resilience. When we go through something difficult in life, especially a tough relationship, it can sometimes take little pieces of us. I think that it’s possible for people to forget how resilient and powerful they are, and it’s important to help clients cope, heal, and find new pieces to replace and fill those that are missing.

My clinical style is client-centered, solution-focused, and very much based on evidence-based practices. I am trained in the Gottman Method, which I utilize when working with couples, as well as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), along with other treatment modalities.

Human connection is a powerful thing. My goal as a therapist is to provide a steady and safe source of support for my clients, all while helping remind them that even though their journey may be difficult, it is unique and important and we can work together to get them to a healthy place.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Oh wow – this is a fun question! I would definitely plan an itinerary around art and food, because those are my two favorite things about LA! We would start off with a trip to In-N-Out, because who doesn’t love a good burger after a long flight? We’d spend tons of time at museums in town, including LACMA, the Getty, the Getty Villa, the Broad, MOCA, etc. We’d definitely plan to have dinner at a couple of my favorite restaurants, such as Bicyclette, Hatchet Hall, Lumière Brasserie, Terra, Angelini Osteria, Gwen, or Rustic Canyon. It’s impossible to come to LA and not have tasty cocktails and wine, so you’d probably find us enjoying drinks at the Viceroy in Santa Monica, the Four Seasons, Mignon, or Sur Le Vert. And an absolute must have is lunch at Sunnin, because they’ve got the best Lebanese food in town. Dim Sum in the SGV would be a must as well, for sure. If time allowed, we’d plan a day trip to Santa Barbara for wine tasting and some time by the beach. I went to college there so it’s my home-away-from-home and favorite place ever.

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my husband, Tom, my father, and my sisters, who always stood by me, supported me, and believed in me (even when I didn’t). I’d also like to dedicate my shoutout to all of the mentors, colleagues, and patients/clients I have learned from along the way – I wouldn’t be where I am today without those connections and experiences.
