Meet Paulo Pérez | Director & Writer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Paulo Pérez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Paulo, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
What don’t I get inspired by? I even get inspired by certain album titles. Movies are a mesh of art and that keeps it endlessly fulfilling. There’s tremendous expression in movies but if the only thing I enjoyed was movies then all of my movies would just be about movies. My passions are boundless and they get funnelled into my writing. Though I don’t do it all for myself, I do it for y’all. That’s the true fuel. With people clamoring for creativity in cinema, with people saying that there has never been such a lack of inventiveness, something had to be done. I picked up the crown I found in the gutter so to speak. Why not me?

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
There’s only one Paulo Pérez. Not 6, not 5, not 4, not 3, not 2 but one. The art I make stems from a peculiar place. Then it branches off and deviates more which is why there has never been a movie like The Human Supremacist before. Part of my approach to art is to have high regards for the audience. I craft the story under the assumption that the audience is brilliant. I won’t dumb it down. Every story doesn’t have to be wrapped with a bow on it. There are great wonders in ambiguity. The movies with several layers and buried layers are so refreshing to watch multiple times. With each viewing, something new is realized. That’s the case with The Human Supremacist as well.
I feel honored for bringing creatives together to contribute something for the world. Cinema is one of America’s largest exports. The Human Supremacist transcends all borders and demographics. If you like laughing and artistry, you’ll like The Human Supremacist. I got to where I am professionally because of the relationships I’ve had over the years. Golly, I’ve known my editor since I was in elementary school. I met the colorist in college in addition to a graphic designer. Plenty of others had less history with me but we can’t unite towards one vision if there’s not cohesion amongst artists. Nothing about making a movie is easy. Everything that’s valuable in life is hard. Going for the hard shot, the hard monologue, the sound effect that’s going to require 7 different programs, those things are going to pay dividends. We overcome that difficulty by remembering that we’re all a part of something bigger than ourselves. Sometimes you gotta think about the poor kid in Alabama who hasn’t laughed in a couple years and just wishes somebody could make a captivating comedy-thriller. With that in mind, we push through adversity. The largest lesson was realizing what the color magenta was. We used it all the time to label since it’s quite vibrant. Real talk, the largest lessons for projects like this normally aren’t artistic ones.
I want people to know that The Human Supremacist is a compelling, creative force.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ll tell you, when people visit me, I give them a clash of tourist hotspots and the hidden gems or places that don’t receive attention from non-locals. I want to give them an experience that they couldn’t have in their own city. If somebody has In-N-Out in his hometown, then we’re not going but if they don’t then boy do I know just the spot and I’ll let them in on the secret menu. Yes, some activities and places are inherently more interesting than others but when you’re with your best friend or anybody else near and dear, you could do anything, you could be anywhere and be happy.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I could go on and on. Most of all, the recognition goes to the executive producers of my life: my parents. They emboldened me in this unusual odyssey I decided to spur. Directing the movie, The Human Supremacist, was a lifelong process in a way. I couldn’t have developed my skills without the way they shaped me. My mom and dad still have drawings of mine from when I was a lad. They were both there at the first screening of the movie, that’s a memory that I’ll always cherish.
