We had the good fortune of connecting with Perry Picasshoe and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Perry, what do you want people to remember about you?
My ultimate objective when creating any work is to produce art that transcends time and serves as a constant reminder that art isn’t something you just see on a wall but rather ‘something you live in’. I aspire to be recognized as a cult classic within the Queer and Latinx communities. My hope is that as time passes, my work will endure and continue to inspire my community repeatedly. I find resonance in the concept of my art evolving and transforming in tandem with the viewers, whether through physical changes or cultural shifts.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As an artist in every facet of the term, I find myself deeply indebted to the creative outlet that sustains me. Whether it be painting, photography, welding, designing, or overall just creative directing, I am driven by a need to express my ideas and bring something tangible to life.

I am interested in finding my own way to blend fashion and fine art. I have been transforming my paintings into various textiles. For instance, I transformed a painting into a jacquard tapestry, from which I created a sewing pattern and subsequently crafted a hoodie and pants set. I have also had my paintings printed onto silk scarves to further play into the concept of living with art.

Currently, I am interested in exploring the Queer experience and how safe spaces are formulated. I have been hosting events where only Queer individuals are permitted to enter a space and participate in an art piece. The first event I hosted explored the concept of Gatekeeping for Survival.I hosted a Kiki for only Queers to join, and at the end of the night, I unveiled a painting to the intimate group. After we all viewed the piece, we used red oil paint to collectively cover up the painting, ensuring that only the few of us in the room could see it. he latest work centered around the idea of “Queer Wishes” and the bathroom as a safe space. I had individuals write down wishes they might not be able to express out loud onto ribbons and then tied them around a dress made of bath towels. This dress, along with all the wishes, is currently on exhibition at the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The first stop on our list would be to grab a coffee and maybe even a light breakfast from “Back to the Grind”. It is a Queer owned and ran coffee shop on university ave with exceptional coffee and impeccable vibes. The cozy atmosphere would allow us to sit, catch up, and set our intentions for the day. From there, we would walk right around the corner to visit the Cheech Marin Center for Chicano Art & Culture. This is one of my all time favorite art museums, their curation of Chicanx art is top tier. Everything there is so inspiring. We might even take a sketchbook with us so we can sit and sketch our favorite artworks. Once we made our way around the entire exhibition, we would walk down the street for a quick stop at my studio. There would be a place to show what I am working on and collect ourselves. Once rested, we would walk over to the Food Lab for a quick lunch, and then pop into the Rain Cross District to go thrifting and walk off our lunch. There’s always something good at this shop. Always. I’d then take us to Fairmont park to see the rose garden, ducks, and watch the sunset. We’d then conclude the night with a fun outing at either the Menagerie or VIP.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my best friend, Dillo. He is an exceptional individual and a gifted ceramicist. His ability to manipulate porcelain into intricate and surreal floral sculptures is truly awe-inspiring. I am honored to have the opportunity to join his upcoming art collective, “TA DA.”
