We had the good fortune of connecting with Pete Escobar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Pete, what makes you happy? Why?
Photography makes me happy — obviously! To be specific, what fulfills me the most is capturing a moment in time that can’t be repeated whether it be a historical event, a split-second moment on the street, or a moment between friends. A bonus is when I can make someone happy by capturing a significant moment for them, like a proposal or wedding.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The funny thing about my photography profession is how spontaneously it happened. I went to school for journalism and was fully convinced I was meant to be a writer and, to be fair, I still am career-wise. I was the arts editor for my school’s paper, El Paisano, and I couldn’t find a photographer to shoot the music festival Beach Goth that I was covering, so I ended up shooting it myself. I had a friend show me the basics of how to handle a camera, I shot the festival, and that’s where it all started! When my father got me my first camera, a Canon Powershot, I mostly took photos of my friends, but one photo of a protester at LAX following Trump’s executive order got published in a book at my school. Once that happened, I realized taking photos can be more than just a fun hobby and something that can have an impact on my community. As my skills have developed over time, I’ve learned to love capturing photos of artists at concerts, working the streets as a street photographer, or simply capturing photos of the sky in my backyard.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Thankfully, I live in L.A., so the options are endless! As much as people hate the city, I’d want to show it to them in a way that might alleviate any misconceptions they might have about it. In a city full of talented artists, I’d want to take them to a show, whether it be an art show or a band’s performance, I would want them to see the talent and passion that this community has. After that, we would hit a brewery like Angel City or a more divey spot like Tony’s Saloon where we could grab a slice at Pizzanista. The itinerary would include a trip to Laguna Beach where the water is clear and the sunsets are beautiful. A hike at the Griffith Observatory followed by a visit would also be essential. I would also like to show them my hometown of Whittier to add a bit of sentimental value to the trip.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank both my mom and my girlfriend. They’ve been an incredible support system for me by helping me through tough times and always believing in me.
