We had the good fortune of connecting with Peter Luo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Peter, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
I’m extremely proud of a new program I created that provides tremendous opportunities for underrepresented filmmakers and storytellers. Its called ‘Stars Collective’ and supports emerging filmmakers with funding for development and production of movies and TV series. Never has there been a better moment to lean into the future of global storytelling, and by that I mean diverse voices crafting, telling and sharing the stories that audiences globally will embrace. While progress in being made, the full democratization of filmmaking has yet to be realized in the current Hollywood ‘system’ and there are still significant obstacles for emerging filmmakers, so we are providing opportunities for them to break out in a big way. I’m proud to be in a position to launch this program and excited to see careers get jumpstarted.
What should our readers know about your business?
Well, we all know success is rarely distilled down to just one attributing factor. Its usually some sort of combination of preparation, experience, skill, drive, knowledge, attitude, and even luck, at times, not to mention success means something different to every individual. But if I’m placing weight on what I feel is the most important factor contributing to success for me, I’ll say the mindset of never being completely satisfied. I’m always looking ahead, never behind, and running down goals I set regularly. It’s this endless chase that drives me and challenges me at the same time.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Hahaha – is this a trick question? What stage of the lockdown are we even in any more?! We’ll go to whatever is actually open! Ok, for arguments sake, I’ll rewind or fast forward to a non-pandemic time. I live and work in Beverly Hills, so any itinerary would conveniently start with a meal at one of the great neighborhood restaurants. Institutions really. Maybe The Palm, maybe Il Pastaio, Mastro’s or Spago. To many great ones to choose from – I’d let my guest make the tough decision here. With time on our side, seeing the full landscape of L.A. is a must – and wonderfully rewarding. Everything downtown and adjacent areas like Echo Park have to offer – on to Malibu, Santa Monica and Venice and the adventures along the coast – to Culver City, West LA, and all the hot spots in Hollywood, West Hollywood and trendy areas like Melrose, Fairfax District and Silver Lake. My itinerary would be full of culinary experiences (formal and informal), shows, historical site visits, nature exploration and experiences, and of course a lot of traffic in between– everything L.A. has to offer! The whole experience. Few cities can match the unique magic of L.A. Its interesting how long one can live in this amazing city and realize how many places there still are to visit and experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am extremely grateful for the talented and resilient team at Starlight and proud of how everyone here has responded to the pandemic this year. Our job is to make good content, and its been immensely challenging to do what we do under the conditions that have existed since March. But the team here has risen to the challenge and faced every obstacle head on, and we’re only growing stronger because of this. My team at Starlight deserves a lot of credit for not just getting the work done, but doing so with tone-setting vigor. Their support means everything to me.
