We had the good fortune of connecting with Philesha Stern and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Philesha, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
In college, a professor told us that we had to make a choice: career or family because you can’t have both! I was never the girl that dreamed of her wedding or how many kids I’d have, but I knew marriage and a family would happen naturally… & a I still wanted my career!
Work life balance is so important and thought about all wrong. Life work balance is more accurate. Prioritize your life first! Take the trip, go on all the dates… live your best life because you only get one.
One of the beautiful things about creating art, (all forms) you need to have culture, experience, world knowledge and street intellect to enhance the beauty you create.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Boujee Curls Salon is a curl- focused salon, meaning we only cut, color and style naturally curly, coily, kinky and wavy textures. My background and training taught me that cutting naturally curly hair should be done in a specialized cutting technique that enhances the shape while teaching clients proper techniques and routines for healthy hair.
What sets us apart from other salons is we only work with curls and never force you to straighten your hair. Literally curls only!
I worked as a curly hair specialist for 8 years; learning + working with all different curl types, textures, lengths and densities before deciding it was time for a full service salon in LA!
In business, especially salons, there will always be hurdles. I’ve had way too many over the years to pick just one but my advice is; on those heavy days, take a deep breath in and remember why you started in the first place. Find the light for your craft again and dust yourself off and get back to it! The world is waiting for you peach 😉
I would like the world to know that I’m an LA girl to my core and I love me some curly hair! It’s literally my obsession and I’m so blessed + thank God every day to be a salon owner in my city!!!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
So first we have to get coffee and catch up on all the tea we’ve missed when she lands, so we had straight to Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen in Inglewood (Hey Issa!). Then she may want to pick up some crystals and sage to get her energy together while she’s here… so we head straight to Angels on Earth in Inglewood also. She’ll of course stop by Boujee Curls to get her hair together while she’s in town 😉
I’m a sucker for the beach, so we can end the night with a bonfire at Dockweiler Beach with a few of the homies to celebrate life! Cheers! I think one of the best ways to enjoy any city is to do it like the locals! Hit some food trucks, enjoy an outdoor concert in the park, go for a hike, do some vintage and thrift shopping and get some tacos!!!!!
We would definitely be doing some shopping, so we’re at Sorella Boutique on Melrose Ave and no doubt we’re going to Melrose Trading Post followed by brunch at My 2 Cents LA for the fried catfish or shrimp and grits….. so good!
After we’re doing running the streets and burning our wallets, we’ll head back to my house and spend time with family! It’s always important to connect with the ones you love and unwind.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The man behind the scenes… Mr. Curtis Stern. He definitely deserves A Lot of credit for Boujee Curls (he literally found the location! Lol). Not only is he my husband + an incredible father… he’s my business partner. Together we’ve been through it all but he made many sacrifices so that I could live out my dreams of owning my own salon!
