We had the good fortune of connecting with William Smariga and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi William, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I wanted to be my own boss, and to do something that had a positive impact on people. I have always been into health and wellness, and knew that would be my focus at some level. When I first decided to make soap, it was because all of the “natural” body care that I could find put synthetic ingredients, colors, and fragrances in their products, and packaged with plastic on top of plastic. I also was into the idea of a bar shampoo to reduce use of plastic. Now I am working towards growing my own ingredients to put into my craft, and am excited to see where that takes me!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love making things; to see the final result of my work. I first learned this when I was growing medical cannabis, I could start with a seed and take that all the way to the final product. It took years of working jobs where I was unhappy and then taking the chance to live out of my van for a few years while I figured out what path I wanted to take. I also tried starting an app before doing natural body care and failed miserably. There is nothing easy about starting your own business, but it is more rewarding than any other job.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
First thing in the morning is to get the best coffee in the world at Lighthouse cafe, then go to the Douglas preserve and take the dogs out for a walk.

Just below Douglas is Hendry’s beach which is our dog friendly beach. We would go to the boathouse at least once for lunch (even if the wait is 2 hours).

We would for sure go to the SB farmers market where you can get just about anything you could imagine. While downtown we would get a drink at the Press Room, pick up bread from Oat Bakery, and if we are hungry to Sama Sama or Bibiji for an outstanding appetizer or meal.

We would spend time in the garden picking fruit and veggies, in the kitchen cooking, and in the yard soaking up the sun.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My partner in life, Kera. She has been so supportive and allows me the time and space that I need to get creative.

My son Odin. He inspires me to be the best possible me, and to create the best life for him he could imagine.
