We had the good fortune of connecting with Philipp Schaedler and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Philipp, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
For about 8 years of my professional life I have worked as an employee. The rest of the time and still to this day, I have always been an independent contractor. For roughly 23 years I had my own business with about 14 employees. While it was a great experience with lots of ups and downs, thinking back to that time, we had great fun working as a highly trained and professional team and we all shared and enjoyed different levels of success throughout that time. However, there was a time where I did not want to manage and babysit employees any longer and decided to go into real estate about 5 years ago. As a realtor I am independent, run my own business as I see it fit and if I need help then I hire a freelancer.
As an employee you have the security of having a steady income, but there is a ceiling to how much income you can have. Having your own business the income sometimes is not so secure but there really is no ceiling of how much income you can create for yourself. On the other hand of course, the work hours are longer, but if you enjoy what you do then it is no longer work.

What should our readers know about your business?
Growing up in a prestigious ski resort in Austria, early on I was taught hospitality and proper manners and dealing with the elite public in general. We had guests in our Austrian ski resort from the Shah from Persia to Princess Caroline and her family from Monaco to high ranking politicians and their many associates who would come every year for the annual ski vacation. Being very fortunate growing up in that type of environment has really helped me in many ways, particularly in the many business avenues I have pursued over the years. What this type of exposure has imprinted on me was to always offer top quality service, to mentally anticipate what the client wants before they even have verbally expressed their desire or asked for it.
Once you are accustomed to that type of mindset, you automatically and genuinely always put the client’s interest first before your own, always and without exception.
This has helped me tremendously in all the businesses I have owned and operated throughout my professional career.
This mentality is highly beneficial in my real estate career now, and looking back, I am so grateful to all the people that helped shape me this way and greatly encouraged me to carry this mindset forward through the rest of my life.
In real estate particularly, you will only get a deal or have a client sign the dotted line if they feel you have their best interest at heart and that they can trust you. The bonus you receive from this type of mindset is creating long lasting business relationships.

Interestingly enough, business associates and clients have pointed out to me and are encouraging me to become a coach, to relay and pass on that type of business mindset. It does take courage to go down that road and speak in front of a crowd, but one thing I have heard from Nick Santonastasso, a motivational speaker that will change your life, and I always replay this in my mind: “Whatever you want in life is on the other side of fear”

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

When friends visit me from out of town, I want them to have a great time. To start with, I would take them to breakfast at the Intercontinental Hotel downtown Los Angeles, way up high, I believe on the 70th floor at a Los Angeles downtown highrise. Not only is the view incredible and spectacular but the breakfast buffet is just as outstanding!
Beyond that, I may take them to the amazing Huntington Library in Pasadena, or a drive along the Malibu coast heading north for a treat and some great dining by the beach. If they are interested in art, I’ll take them to the Norton Simon Museum or the Getty Museum.
I might also take them to the Figaro Bistro on Vermont and Melbourne Ave, a restaurant that has been at that location for several decades, which also has become a favorite hang out for some celebrities and probably the closest match to an authentic French bistro here in Los Angeles.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So this is where it gets interesting. I have met (very few) successful people who claim they did it all themselves. I have also met many other successful people who told me that without the help of others they would never be where they are now. One of my favorite quotes is: “Success has many fathers” This certainly applies to my story.
Particularly in this country, as I am originally from Austria, I have always said that the “Core American” is the most kind, helpful and supportive individual who genuinely enjoys other people’s success and loves to help you along the way. This has definitely been the case for me.
The one person that comes to mind immediately is my real estate mentor Sandy Holguin. Mentoring me with sharing her incredible knowledge, patience and never ever talked down to me or made me feel I am less. While she is very stern, she always lifts me up. I feel blessed and honored to have been matched up with Sandy.
Ironically, at first I was matched with a mentor, a gentleman who was not very kind, called me and told me he had no time for me and I have to look for someone else!. Luckily, this was a short lived disappointment and a blessing in disguise, as I got a second match up and thankfully it was Sandy Holguin. Everything happens for a reason, doesn’t it?
