Meet Pilar Zurita | Tattoo Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pilar Zurita and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pilar, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m from Pilas, a very small town in Spain. When I was a child I had a lot of interest in art, I was always drawing. My two aunts raised me while my parents were working; they used to embroider shawls and we spent many hours together, painting, drawing… and they always encouraged my creativity, along with my parents. I think having a family that supports me since I was very young has helped me a lot to achieve my goals.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a tattoo artist who specialises in color work, realism and microrealism. Framing classic art in different shapes, like dragonflies, butterflies, flowers… make my work very special; the creativity, the vibrancy of the colours and the multiple details in each tattoo would be something to highlight about my work.
I was studying Fine Arts at university when I decided to drop everything and dedicated my self to tattooing 100%.
In the town where grew up in Spain, there was no tattoo studio, so I rented a space and started giving tattoos to my friends and family while practicing, It wasn’t an easy path, but if you have a dream and want to fulfill it, you have to fight for it.
I have always been inspired by art, the works of Van Gogh, Klimt, Monet, Dalí…
That’s why I include them in my designs, always in a creative and original way so that each tattoo is unique.
I like to tattoo in color because it makes every tattoo a challenge, and it helps me strive to grow as an artist every day.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Williamsburg, is a really cool neighbourhood in New York, where you can find a lot of good restaurants and spots. First I would go with her for a matcha tea in Nippon Cha (I’m obsessed with this place). Then we will take a pottery class in one of the studios that you can find here. Afterwards we would go for a walk near the water where you can enjoy the best view of New York, where we would take the ferry to go to Manhattan.
We would have lunch and have some margaritas at The Boucherie West Village, a French restaurant that I love. Then we will go for a walk in the Soho and buy some vintage clothes.
We would go to the Summit observatory to see the sunset and take some cool photos.
And then we will take the ferry back home, to Williamsburg, and have dinner at The Oregano restaurant, an Italian place that have one of the best spaghetti that i have ever tried.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
To my parents and aunts who always believed in me, supporting me when I left engineering to be an artist, and helped me open my first tattoo studio. To my brother and friends who let me tattoo them for the first time without knowing if the tattoo would look good or not, to my husband for making me a better person and moving with me to another continent to make my dream possible.
To Eva, for being a reference, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to be tattooing in her studio, where I have become the artist I want to be.
And of course to all the clients who trusted me and trust me everyday and and let me create on their skin.
