Meet Pj Owens: Creative Director, Brand Strategist & Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Pj Owens and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pj, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting my own business and brand is LEGACY. This is not just about my legacy. For me it’s about playing a small role in helping people OWN the greatness that they possess. I like to call that LEGACY WORK! Money and perks are just benefits of our LEGACY WORK! I honestly had this mindset before starting my business! This is such an interesting question….I believe that sometimes along the journey we have to revisit that point of no return. The very moment we decided to run and never stop! The spark that was in our spirits, the endless possibilities, the zeal and the purpose behind it all. Life comes with assignments in the form of people, places and things! I wanted to be sure that my assignment was not only fulfilled but it was executed with a level of excellence that will then become my legacy.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I like to think of myself as a SUPER CREATIVE! From Singing, to clothing design, creative direction and everything in-between. Creativity has always been a safe space for me. It’s home. I started singing at a very early age. I’ve had the opportunity to share stages with industry heavyweights such as Jill Scott, Hezekiah Walker, Tye Tribbett and a host of other acclaimed music talents. Simultaneously, in business, I’ve been afforded the opportunity to launch award-winning projects and guide innovative marketing campaigns for countless clients as CEO of MUSE Branding & Development Agency. I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Communications from the University of the Arts. It was there I discovered a fiery passion for branding and advertising. It hasn’t always been easy. The road to entrepreneurship / building a brand is not for the fainthearted. The rise of social media and this false sense of “ success ” has deceived people into thinking this life is a walk in the park. Plain and simple, this life takes hard labor and dedication. You have to take risks , you have to understand that a “NO” is just as powerful as a “YES”. It takes courage, faith, prayer, tears, late nights and early mornings and a bunch of other stuff to truly make things happen. I made a promise to myself that I would Die empty having used every gift and talent that I possess in this lifetime! I’m holding on to that promise. One of my personal mantras is ” Live to create, create to inspire”. I live by this daily! This keeps me accountable. This keeps me grounded. Always a power-player and never a sideliner!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
This is such a loaded question! So, I am from Philadelphia, home of the rocky statue, cheesesteaks, water ice and soft pretzels! This trip would be a mixture of culture and FUN! I know all the official & unofficial hotspots in my city! LOL HERE WE GO! Let’s just do a check list! 1. Taking pics at the Rocky statue 2. Running up the art museum steps while playing the Rocky theme song ( this has to be done in slow motion on our phones for effect). 3. Tour of Old City to see all of the historic moments the city has to offer. 4. AUTHENTIC ITALIAN water ice and soft pretzels in South Philadelphia. 5.Tour of South Street & Shopping district! 6. Cheese Steaks from the MAX’S in North Philadelphia. ( P.S.- CHEESE WIZ ON CHEESESTEAKS IS NOT AN AUTHENTIC PHILLY-ISM!!!!) LOL 7. Drive to King of Prussia Mall to do a bunch of unnecessary shopping! 8. Head Home to get dressed and hit the town for a night of dancing in Old City! 9. Family Night with 90’s music, lots of seafood and love! 10. TOP GOLF!! I could go on but you get the picture! FOOD, LOVE , LAUGHTER AND EVERYTHING IN-BETWEEN LOL

Alright, so let’s jump right in! The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there a person, group, organization, book, etc. that you want to dedicate your shoutout to? Who else deserves a little credit and recognition in your story?
This shotout goes to a very special moment in time that I was a part of. The Joy Unlimited Youth Mass Choir. I joined this choir at the age of 10 and it changed my life forever. It wasn’t just because I loved to sing and it gave me an outlet to hangout with kids just like myself. Joy Unlimited was special because what was only supposed to last for 1 summer lasted 27 years. This organization touched over 2,000 youth and young adults throughout the tristate area. This is where friends became family…. Thanks JU 🙂
