We had the good fortune of connecting with PorkyMae Beatz and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi PorkyMae, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
The most important lesson my business and career has taught me is that I get to decide how my story is told. I get to decide how my business is viewed, respected, and frequented. I am my own brand. How I conduct myself, treat my clients, and invest into my business is directly related to the success of my business. Truly, I am the master of my fate.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a makeup artist, my goal is to provide an enhanced beauty experience while maintaining quality service. I often say that makeup is my ministry because it is about so much more than applying makeup to faces. I appreciate each and every person that has sat in my chair and shared their time with me. When a client comes to me, my goal is make sure they understand that no matter what I put on their face, the canvas they came in with is the most beautiful. Self love is so important, especially in today’s day and age. I am a woman who believes that there is nothing wrong with wanting to enhance what you already have, but I want people to know that it is an accessory, not a necessity. I have built my business by not only consisetnly investing in my craft to be better, but also by remembering good customer service is the only way to continuously thrive in this business. Respect is paramount to my brand and my business. I also pay homage to the MUAs that have invested in me whether it be by training, sharing knowledge, or just encouraging me to keep pushing. I am my own competition and my own worst critic. I strive daily to be better than the MUA I was the day before, and it keeps me motivated to never stop climbing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To show my best friends the best time ever on a visit, we are definitely going to be eating a lot of food and living our best lives while galivanting around town. That might include going to the Comedy Zone to see what comedians are performing because we are going to laugh, no matter what. There are going to be some impromptu iphone photoshoots happening as well because we live for a pose. Downtown Greenville has some great restaurants and adult playgrounds that I am sure we would have to hit up as well. There will absolutely be wine and hookah involved because no adventure would be complete without a little bar scene action and because I always need to shake a tail feather!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am no one without Big Sandals and all that He has blessed me with, first and foremost. God has seen me through the best of times, and the darkest of times. He has also placed people in my life exactly when I needed them to ensure that, no matter how dark it got, I could always find my way back to the light. My friend and mentor SmithaLee is owed a large part of whatever success I have had and will have in the future. He is a photographer and videographer who saw something in me years ago no matter how much I fought being a creative. He has invested in me financially, spiritually, and mentally to ensure that I am always aware that I’m not out here alone and that I can be anything I can envision. My family is like my sounding board. They keep me clear and humble through everything. My friends are my refuge when I need to be reminded of exactly who I am or a swift kick in the ass. They have taught me how to bask in all that I am while also working daily to become even better. Without my tribe, I am nothing. With them, I am unstoppable.
