We had the good fortune of connecting with Preston Douglas Boyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Preston Douglas, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Making art is all about taking risks. The vulnerability, truth telling, and self reflection process that creating art inherently entails takes courage. The idea of being an artist is a risk unto itself due to a lack of stability in normal societal norms. My first major artistic risk occurred about 10 years ago when I decided I was going to launch a menswear fashion company, and I had zero experience or knowledge in how to make clothes. On a micro level, each painting I make, and each brush stroke or gesture within, is a risk. Maybe that one mark will either make or break the painting, but I just make one decision, and move on, something one of my first art mentors taught me when I took that leap of faith in fashion many years ago.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a multidisciplinary artist. I work between painting, fashion, and performance, and my work considers how these forms are physical manifestations of the spiritual journey. My paintings are both remnants of performances and starting points for installations, and they often address how surfaces can allude to both beauty and darkness through examining contemporary cultural conviction. Since moving my studio to LA a year ago, I’ve been focusing on this performance project REPURPOSED RELIGION. We had our first performance last October, and are looking forward to the second piece, which will be debuting this fall.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
El Matador State Beach, Wi Spa, and Moo’s Craft Barbecue.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
