We had the good fortune of connecting with Vivian Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vivian, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m originally from Los Angeles county, grew up all over the place- Carson, Torrance, Silverlake. Most people think growing up here is super glamorous but I didn’t appreciate it until I moved away from college. Now I see how growing up in such a special place helped me get a leg up on working in the arts industry.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Who I am sets me apart from other comedians and artists. I mean how many queer Mexican Jews do you know of? That being said, who I am has always been a challenge too. Sometimes I know I get looked over or not booked, or even not listened to because I’m not a cis white guy – but that’s changing in the industry too; I deff think its getting better.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well growing up in Torrance I spent a lot of time at the beach, Redondo Beach more specifically, it’s one of my favorite places to go. There’s so much to do at the Redondo Beach Pier like the Fun Factory, there’s every kind of old school video game and you can win those amazing crappy prizes that bring you back to your childhood. Then I’d take them to Old TOny’s on the pier, an amazing bar jutting out over the ocean with beautiful views of the coast. The bar is an old 70’s dream with floating rainbow globes and shrimp cocktails. As it transitioned to night I’d take everyone out to Jumbo’s Clown room – one of my fav bars in L.A.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Obviously I have to give it up to my family. I am blessed to have a great big family raise me and be a part of shaping who I am today. They mean everything to me and I hope they know how they shaped my life! Growing up all over the city made it hard to have a physical home but I always found a sense of home being with my family.
