We had the good fortune of connecting with Abdi Manavi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abdi, where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
As my father would say, I am not for anywhere I am a citizen of the world. That is true, but also my international upbringing and extensive travel, impacted who I am today. My parents emphasized travel as early as I can remember, always taking me with them wherever they went. I am Persian, raised in London and then moved to the states when I was nine. Half of my personality is very European and the other half very Los Angeles. During middle school and some high school, this actually became a bit of an issue as I did not know how to act sometimes. When I went to university in Boston, that was no longer an issue as the diversity of students was a perfect place for me to become who I am. A little bit LA, and a little bit London.
I have been very fortunate to travel all over the world and experience many cultures. All of them have had an influence on me and have led me to think internationally for whatever life plans I have. I guess that is why I love being a hotelier so I get to meet guests from all over the world that stay with us. It is truly a joy and I think a big part of the success of my hotel that I can relate to most of them on a level that they did not expect due to my travels. I am planning the next hotel in Europe, so I will have one there and one in America, a bit of a reflection of myself.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been able to accomplish the goals I had set for myself on a professional level. It takes vision first and foremost, a lot of perseverance and a bit of luck. I took the right steps to become a hotelier. Had a bar, a restaurant, nightclub, property development, construction and studied a lot of design first hand through travel. There are challenges on a daily basis, but with desire comes the ability to figure out how to keep moving towards the finish line. The main lesson is to stick with it, and always be willing to look at different avenues to get to the same end. We have an amazing boutique hotel in Palm Springs called Dive, having an amazing first year. Come check it out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My parents for always encouraging travel and funding it!
