We had the good fortune of connecting with Pye Jirsa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pye, how do you define success?
Success has been a moving target for me all of my life until I came to the realization that success is actually not a target at all. Success is not a destination that we’ll ever “arrive” at or some exclusive club with a membership. Success is a mindset, attitude and approach that we have along the journey of life. To me that is as simple as adding value along the way. If I have added value to the people and communities that are important to me, then I am successful and happy. What can I do today to add value to my family and my friendships? Have I added value to my community, to my neighborhood, to my online students, to my podcast listeners? If I’m ever in a rut or feeling low, I know what I have to do, simply add more value to the world around me. Some people rephrase this as “service” or “giving.” It’s all essentially the same thing. As human beings, we are generally happy when we feel valued and when we are making an impact on whatever we are doing. Financial success and personal happiness seem to fall into place when I have this approach towards business and life.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am an educator for thousands of photographers around the world on SLR Lounge. My expertise is creating frameworks. These are step-by-step ways of breaking complex topics down to simple and approachable concepts. In addition, I base all of my education on real world experiences. These days there are so many people who make a living coaching and educating online without real world success. in contrast, everything I am teaching is backed by numbers and results. Getting to where I am business-wise has been a rewarding yet challenging journey. As mentioned, we overcame challenges as a team. Along the way, we learned to trust each other, to specialize and become a master in your area of the business, and to embrace conflict and different opinions.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends visit, I bring them into my world and share my interests with them. That might be road biking along PCH, hiking at Crystal Cove, practicing jiu jitsu at a local gym. There are so many incredible things to do in Orange County that we can find something fun for everyone. Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The most important factor behind my success is surrounding myself with the right team members and business partners. Owning a business presents endless challenges that can feel overwhelming at times. But a good team can overcome any obstacle, no matter how big or how small. Whether it’s the good attitude and optimism of one team member or the reliability and decision making of another, our team, as a unit continues to inspire, support and motivate each other to achieve success in our business. A good team also allows business owners to specialize. For example, in our business, I handle all of the content creation while my business partners are in charge of everything else, such as the marketing, HR, accounting, and more. This allows us each to become experts in our areas, finding the best ways to do things and improving on them over time. We set up systems and standardized approaches to each of our processes that help move the business forward. A good team also provides diversity of opinions and experiences. At times, differing opinions can lead to conflict, but it almost always results in a better, final decision or product.
