We had the good fortune of connecting with Q. Fabian and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Q., where are your from? We’d love to hear about how your background has played a role in who you are today?
I’m from Inglewood, California. I think my background and upbringing impacted and influenced me very strongly. I was raised in a strict home that taught me structure, discipline and many life lessons. Places like Inglewood aren’t always the best for people like to me live in. I experienced physically and verbal harassment and assault. I often needed to defend myself which helped make me into a much stronger person. My mother always told me to be me unapologetically and without fear so that was never a problem. The problem is always how people feel about me living my life. My upbringing taught me to never care about that.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is meant to entertain, educate and advocate. I love when people say my music resonates with them and how much they can relate to it. I want to uplift, encourage, enlighten and make people feel my art. I’ve been singing all of my life and I started writing and playing instruments around 7 years old. Music is very natural to me but the business is not. My career is hard for me to pursue because I’m an African-American LGBT+ male and I don’t want to conform to succeed. I stay true to myself and I feel like authenticity and real, raw talent are not as appreciated as they once were so someone like myself needs to work harder. I learn from my own experiences and those of my peers whom I watch and adore. I’ve learned that consistency, hard work and being genuine and honest will pay off and feel the most gratifying. I’ve also learned to be vigilant and thorough with everything you do. I want the world to know that I promote & encourage love, peace, equality, evolution and success for us all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite places in the city right now are Weho, Arts District in Downtown LA, Hollywood, most of all the beach cities, all the amusement parks, carnivals and fairs, fun things like escape rooms, and restaurants like Orleans & York, E&J Seafood, The Serving Spoon, Ruth’s Chris, Bossa Nova & Killer Shrimp.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shoutout my Aunt Kristian. I love her so much. She’s always here for me and we’ve evolved together and learned each other and continue to. I appreciate everything she’s done for me.
