We had the good fortune of connecting with Qi Yun and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Qi, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
From a young age, I have been captivated by the world of fashion, seeing it as a powerful medium for creative expression and innovation. My education at the Fashion Institute of Technology has been instrumental in shaping my understanding and mastery of fashion design. Specializing in Fashion/Apparel Design, I have honed my skills in both the art and technology of garment creation. My hands-on experience with cut & sew techniques has been particularly influential in refining my approach to garment construction, allowing me to bring my creative visions to life with precision and craftsmanship.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey in fashion design has been a blend of passion, creativity, and perseverance, each step contributing to the unique identity of my work. As a graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology with a Master of Fine Arts in Fashion/Apparel Design, my education laid a strong foundation for my career. Specializing in cut & sew techniques, I have developed a distinctive approach to garment construction that emphasizes precision and creativity.

One of my proudest achievements is participating in my upcoming graduation show at New York Fashion Week. This opportunity to showcase my designs on such a prestigious platform is both exhilarating and humbling. It represents the culmination of years of hard work and dedication, and I am excited to share my vision with a wider audience.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ll take her to visit The Metropolitan Museum of Art to explore its vast collection, walking through Central Park, stopping at landmarks like Bethesda Fountain and Bow Bridge, and enjoying dinner at Café Boulud and catch a Broadway show in the Theater District.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of working with esteemed fashion houses, such as Bach Mai and Jenny Yoo. At Bach Mai, I leveraged my proficiency in Adobe Illustrator to deliver compelling fashion illustrations, seamlessly blending technical skill with creative vision. This role allowed me to explore the boundaries of design and push my creative limits. Additionally, my production experience at Jenny Yoo further honed my expertise in creating high-quality garments, where I contributed to the design and development of elegant bridal and bridesmaid collections. These experiences have been invaluable in perfecting my skills in fabric selection, draping, and intricate detailing. The dynamic nature of the fashion industry continuously fuels my desire for innovation and growth. I am particularly excited about the opportunity to present my work at my upcoming graduation show during New York Fashion Week. This event represents a significant milestone in my career, providing a platform to showcase my unique designs and contribute to the ever-evolving landscape of fashion.
