We had the good fortune of connecting with Que Alicea and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Que, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I embarked on the journey of starting my own business driven by my unwavering passion for environmental issues and the stark reality that there is only a mere 3% representation of African Americans in this space. With an ardent desire to make a positive impact and contribute to the betterment of society, I felt compelled to channel my energy and expertise into something that aligned with my personal values and goals. Having gained valuable experience as a consultant, I recognized that the time had come to create opportunities for my community and create a lasting legacy.

What should our readers know about your business?
My company, Q & A Consulting LLC, is an environmental firm owned by a black woman, focusing on compliance and safety through environmental investigations. We’re known for our top-notch services and quick responses, and we are the only certified black woman-owned environmental firm in Northern California.
I’m proud we’ve managed tough times, growing and thriving as a business. It’s challenging to run a business as a minority woman in a male-dominated field. Still, our relentless effort, hard work, and resolve have helped us overcome many challenges, making us stronger each time.
The lessons I’ve learned have greatly influenced my business approach and leadership. Staying true to your values and being honest is crucial. This has been key to our success, as we always focus on honesty and transparency.

Having a solid support system is also vital. I’m thankful for my team’s unwavering support and valuable insights. Additionally, having mentors and peers in my network has guided me through the business’s complexities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friends were visiting the area, I would ensure they have an unforgettable time. With a week-long trip, I would curate an itinerary that encompasses the best experiences San Francisco Bayarea place has to offer. First, we would stay at the luxurious Marker Hotel, located in the vibrant Union Square. From there, we would embark on a Painted Ladies City tour, providing a captivating overview of the city’s iconic sights.
To truly immerse ourselves in the diverse culture, we would explore various neighborhoods, such as Japantown, Chinatown, Bayview, North Beach, Mission District, and Valencia Street. Each neighborhood offers its own unique charm and attractions to discover.
Throughout our adventure, we would indulge in the culinary delights of the area. From trendy eateries in the Fillmore/Pacific Heights area to the vibrant Haight Street, we would savor a wide range of cuisines that reflect the vibrant food scene of the city.
Lastly, we would make time to connect with the lively and fascinating individuals who call this place home. Engaging with locals, artists, and entrepreneurs would provide us with a deeper understanding of the city’s spirit and creativity.
Overall, this itinerary aims to showcase the best of our region, combining sightseeing, delectable cuisine, and meaningful connections with the incredible people who contribute to its vibrancy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’m excited to acknowledge the people, groups, organizations, and books that have inspired my entrepreneurial journey. I want to give a special shout-out to those who’ve helped shape my path. As a day spa owner needing new equipment, Deionna Williams, an environmental technician, introduced me to an important fire project in Southern California, igniting my interest in environmental safety. Jeffrey Johnson, a certified asbestos consultant, guided me in environmental safety knowledge. Vanessa Rhodes, a successful construction business owner and close friend, has been a great support in running a black-owned woman’s business in a male-dominated industry, helping me with business operations, contracts, and overall well-being.
I’m also grateful for Dr. Janice Greene, President of the Women Business Enterprise Council Pacific, who passionately supports and builds women-owned businesses. Her advice has been crucial in growing Q & A Consulting. Miguel Galarza, a key figure in the San Francisco business community, has mentored me, pushing me towards excellence. The San Francisco Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program also played a big role in developing my leadership skills and expanding my business network.
The book “Traction” by Gino Wickman has greatly influenced my approach to business ownership, success, and work-life balance.
Finally, I thank everyone who has impacted my journey and helped me succeed as an entrepreneur. Their guidance inspires me to urge others to follow their dreams and overcome challenges.
