We had the good fortune of connecting with Qway Starchild and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Qway, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Giving up should only be done once, you’ve accomplished so much that you’re tired. As for me, I am far from tired. I truly believe one should never give up. I pursued music, my career is music, and I know that it is a long shot that I’ll actually make it, but I have to try. I have to put all of my energy into it before I fold. If I never make it to the top, I want to at least said that I gave it my all and touched a few spirits along the way.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other creatives and artists, is my ability to capture your spirit, and make it resonate to what I am saying. When I rap, every emotion that I am feeling, pours into the ears and heart of the listener. I have honed my skills and extended my vocabulary so that the listener can not only feel what I am feeling at the moment, but they can revisit the song later to capture a certain word or phrase that they may have missed the first time. I am most proud of the progression that I have made. In the beginning, I was no phenom; I was not gifted right off the bat with the talent. I worked extremely hard and I have seen the outcome of it. To listen to your old work and cringe because of how weak you think you might’ve sounded, is a direct testament to your growth. And I admire that the most. I got to where I am from sheer passion. I have always had an affinity for music, and my love for words just meshed ever so perfectly with it. But if it weren’t for my pops waking me up at 2 A.M. to record a song at the age of 10 for the first time, then I wouldn’t be here. I have faced a plethora of challenges within journey, but I have weathered may storms by praying, staying in good faith, and creating whenever I possibly can. I have learned that there is no easy way to success. There isn’t a magic button to press. You really have to stay grounded and strive for what you truly want. I want the world to know that I have no true desire to be famous, I just want people to understand that I bleed like them, that I feel, move, and breathe like them. And I make music just for them.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am big on history and knowledge, so my itinerary would consist of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the California Science Center, and the African American Museum. Just being in that vibe does something to me. For food, I’d suggest Harold’s Chicken LA. It is a new spot in Hollywood that is definitely making a name in the West Coast. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First off I’d like to give a shoutout to God. Without Him, I’d be a wandering soul. Next I would like to shoutout my family and friends, because without their love, encouragement, and support, I wouldn’t be the talent that I am today. We often overlook the minor details, the minor acts of support that we receive on a daily basis. A simple sentence such as “I’m proud of you”, holds so much importance. And I have truly been blessed to hear that throughout my music journey. Lastly, I would like to give a shoutout to myself. I hope that doesn’t come off as vain, it’s just that I am proud that I have made it this far. Even with all of the words of encouragement and love, it is still up to me to fulfill my obligations and create everything. Throughout my battles with depression, I have come out on top. I have proved that I am victorious with battling self-infliction, and I am proud to say that I will not turn back.
