We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Howell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rachel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I strongly believe that we all deserve to feel good in our skin, bodies, and minds. I don’t believe in fad diets, unhealthy methods of reaching physical goals, or short-term solutions. I believe that it’s important to commit to serving yourself from the inside out on a cellular level, which means learning sustainable practices to improve your health that last forever. My goal with Well + Good was to create evidence-based nutrition services that get to the root cause of clients’ health struggles and create customized wellness plans based on individuals’ biological needs.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Well + Good offers customized holistic nutrition and wellness plans emphasizing self-acceptance and a positive relationship with mind, body, movement, and food. Well + Good nutrition counseling is evidence based and is accepting of all individuals.
Well + Good is a labor of love that has grown over the past 10 years. My wellness journey started with me writing a list called “10 Ways to Get Happy.” This memo for self-preservation contained directions to meditate, go to therapy, spend time with positive people, move because it feels good, and ding ding dig — to eat well! The Happy List evolved into more lists, recipes, challenges, and how-to’s to better cope with mental health challenges, disordered eating habits, and trauma.
Since the Happy List, I learned countless tools from therapy, yoga and meditation classes, my dietetics education, authors, friends, family, and life’s teachers. With positivity, balance, and flexibility as my intentions, I healed my relationship with food and movement and went on to start Well + Good.
At Well + Good, we understand people are busy and deciding to get control of your mind and body can be overwhelming.
If you have a crazy schedule and haven’t been prioritizing your health, Well + Good is here to help you with the time-consuming parts of optimizing your health without compromising your daily life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If you want to experience the greatest Old Fashioned you’ve ever tasted, look no further than 1122. This classy speakeasy on Railroad in downtown Paso Robles is hands down my favorite spot for a cocktail.
Without a doubt, the most delicious pizza in Paso Robles can be found at La Cosecha on 12th St. in downtown Paso Robles. Ask for the oyster mushroom pizza and your socks will be knocked straight off. It has sautéed oyster mushrooms with truffle infused olive oil drizzled on top. It’s insane.
My favorite view in the city is from the top of Piccolo Hotel in downtown Paso Robles on 12th St. The Tetto Rooftop Bar is a lovely spot to snuggle up by a heater, watch the sunset, enjoy a glass of local wine, and catch up with a friend.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My Dad is my ultimate business mentor and role model. He is a first generation American and has never failed to convey the importance of making the most out of what you’re given. He is absolutely responsible for my entrepreneurial spirit. He’ll tell you it all started when he would take me to the SLO Swap Meat when I was 5 years old. Just imagine this little blonde haired, blue eyed, pig- tailed rascal slinging her beanie babies for $2 a pop, eager for a chance to haggle. That’s where I learned I loved the thrill of the sale.
Beanie babies aside, growing up and watching my Dad start his own auto detailing company (while working several other jobs), plant a thriving 20 acre vineyard with nothing but vine cuttings, sawdust, and sweat, and go on to sell grapes for 15 years in the early years of Paso Robles wine country, then develop an extremely successful contracting business he still runs today – my dad has always demonstrated the importance of being your own boss. He helped me recognize the value of setting your own hours, determining your own prices, and deciding the culture of your business and quality of your product or service.
I 100% have him to thank for my success today as a business owner. He taught me what to do to be successful, and what not to do (even if he still did it sometimes). Classic parent move. Thanks Dad!
