Meet Rae Latt | Actor, Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rae Latt and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rae, how do you think about risk?
Being an actor does not happen without being able and willing to take risks. The unknowns are numerous. Will I get the job? How will I pay rent? Who should I study with? How many side hustles do I need to pursue this career? You have to take risks right from the start. After all it’s basically freelance work. Study, study, study! However, Auditioning is a very different skill. I think this is where you take the biggest risks. Especially now in the selftape world. You are pretty much on your own to figure it out and make decisions. Yes, you have several times to get it done or “right” but you hardly ever get the opportunity to ask questions for clarity if you need it. When we had auditions in the room, casting was there with you. You could ask a question or get more information. The extra bonus would be if they ask you to do it again and give some direction. You have to adapt and be willing to take the risk that… you might have interpreted the scene or character wrong. You make a choice, be happy with your work and send it off into the abyss. The toughest part…. Let it go.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have wanted to be an actor since I was a kid! Did I know what that meant? Not at all! I pointed at the TV and said ” I want to do that”. My parents were not in the entertainment business and even though I grew up in Los Angeles, it just wasn’t going to happen. The funny part is they didn’t realize that every time they said “No” that was what kept feeding my desire to act. I would keep pushing them and put on my own little plays at home. They eventually put me into a couple of acting classes as a teen but it did not go further than that. Once I turned 18 I was free to go for it. I found a job, took classes, got some headshots and eventually an agent. I did pretty well for a while. I was playing high school and college kids. Always maintaining odd jobs that would allow me to keep acting. This went on for many years until I just couldn’t do retail, waiting tables, bartending or the 50 other odd jobs I’ve had over the years… I got into photography and my new hustle was headshots. I practiced with some friends and then went for it. I did that for many years with some acting gigs in between. Once I entered the age where I could play a Mom I started working a lot more. That was/is my niche for a longtime. Many great commercials, primetime shows and films! I have been able to make a living just acting. No, it hasn’t always been easy but I just love doing the work! I even love auditioning! I love any opportunity to act! Playing a character, discovering little moments or a trait, finding what lives behind a line… It’s exciting.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
The Hollywood Bowl for a concert. Griffith Park for the views. Taking a walk at the beach on a beautiful L.A. day. Eating some of THE BEST Mexican food around! Las Fuentes, Casa Vega and Ernie’s Taco House are a few of my favorites! Driving up to Santa Ynez for wine tasting and great restaurants. The flea markets! Like in Long Beach or The Rose Bowl! I love a good treasure hunt! Chilling at my house to cook, talk and laugh for hours.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am very lucky to have supportive talent representatives who happen to all be women! They make it known that I am important to them and I hope I make it known to them know how important they are to me. We all want to be loved and I feel that from them! I also have the best actor friends! We all support each other. Everyone helps one another with auditions, scene work and talking through the good, bad and the ugly. My Mom is always excited to see my work. Even the auditions I do. My husband Kevin is always supportive and thankfully he was in the same industry (behind the camera) so he understands the process. I am surrounded by many positive and talented men and women! I am blessed! I would say to anyone, find those positive people who will cheer you on!
