We had the good fortune of connecting with Rael Diaz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rael, how do you think about risk?
Risks, which I prefer to call opportunities, are all about embracing them. Opportunities are present for us to seize. You don’t have to wait until you feel fully prepared to grab hold of an opportunity. These chances are what help us grow in life.
I’ve taken opportunities whenever they’ve come my way. Some have turned out great, while others didn’t work out – but that’s the deal. Failing is just as important as succeeding; it’s about persisting and treating each day as Day 1.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
This journey has definitely been challenging, and that’s actually what I find most rewarding about it. I’ve had to make many sacrifices, and interestingly, they’ve turned into unexpected blessings. Starting out was particularly tough because there’s this perception that you’re not serious, especially if you’re entering the scene from nowhere. It’s as if people put you in a box, and if you step out of it, they’re uncomfortable and might try to push you back in to avoid thinking too hard.
And then there’s that whole “imposter syndrome” thing, which I think some hater came up with. Personally, I believe that having a strong and genuine “why” is what truly matters. You need that unshakable clarity about why you’re doing what you’re doing to navigate through all the mental challenges.
The essence of my brand is for those who want to pursue something without needing others’ approval. It’s like saying, “I want to sing, so I’m going to do it” and then figuring out how to be successful at it. It’s also about embodying consistency and discipline. Respecting oneself and putting in the required effort. You don’t have to have the whole journey mapped out; you just need to tackle what’s right in front of you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a true westside boy, which means I’m not dealing with the 405 freeway if I can help it. So, I’d take my friends to experience Peruvian ceviche at Huarique in Venice. Then, we’d hit up Coppelias in West LA for another round of ceviche. Basically, our week would revolve around indulging in these two places.
For the evenings, it’s all about hitting up Al Tun Tun at Poppy’s in West Hollywood. That’s the one place I’d brave the 405 for, because they play the most amazing Latin music. The energy there is electric.
And hey, there’s no way my friends are leaving town without experiencing the The Bungalow. I know, I know.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My brother, David, has played a crucial role in my music career. The entertainment industry can be tough, with its ups and downs, but having someone with an unwavering mindset like him by my side has been a huge support. He’s always there to lift me up whenever things get tough. He’s shown a remarkable amount of trust in me throughout this journey.
My family and entire group of friends have definitely shown up for me, it wouldn’t be as pleasant without them.
