We had the good fortune of connecting with Ramia Griffin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ramia, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in Sacramento, Ca! Shoutout the 916! Growing up, I played sports my whole life. I really believe I made the most personal growth on the court. I can especially thank my high school coach, he taught me the pain of regret is much greater than the pain of discipline. I give my all to anything that I choose to pursue, keeping myself disciplined and focused so that I can achieve my goals and be successful. At the time, I hated being held accountable, but now I am beyond grateful. Every suicide I had to run, time I was yelled at, and moment that I wanted to quit but kept going, made me the person I am today. A strong, educated, and independent black woman with drive, who will settle for nothing less than excellence.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have always loved photography/videography, but that spark really grew in my last 2 years of college when my mom bought me my first real camera. I couldn’t set it down, I wanted to take pictures of everything in sight. I asked a lot of my friends if I could take pictures of them just so I can practice, and I ended up having a real eye for it. It wasn’t always easy to pursue full time photography when you are a full time college student who is also working and coaching full time, but Ive learned just with anything else in life, if you want it, you just have to figure it out and find a way to make it happen. There is no such thing as procrastination when you want to be successful. I want the world to know, you don’t need someone to hold your hand, a lot of money, or a PhD to be successful, you just need drive and determination.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nothing is better than spending a nice warm OC day at the beach, Laguna Beach for that matter, my favorite beach. First stop Banzai Bowls, grab an açaí bowl with extra bananas and coconut shreds, bring my camera to capture the memories, bring a basketball to shoot some hoops and hopefully play a little a game, and dive into the most beautiful blue ocean. Next stop must of course be Gelato Paradiso and long board down PCH during sunset. If there’s still time, what better way is there to spend the evening than with ferris wheels, margaritas, and virtual reality games all at the Irvine Spectrum. But wait there’s more. Grab the biggest seafood boil bag you can get your hands on at Kickin Crab, grab some blankets, listen to some throwback jams, and vibe the night away in the comfort of your car trunk.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my friends, family, and my dearest love. I have been blessed with the most amazing support system, I love you all.
