We had the good fortune of connecting with Zoey Philippou and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zoey, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Cyprus, a small beautiful island. Growing up with a small community like ours, i felt that anything different than what’s considered to be “normal” was criticized and not easily accepted and of course i was always against this. Since i was a teenager i found my self experimenting with fashion as this was one of the ways to show my point of view, that being different doesn’t have to determine who you are perceived to be in society.
Fashion for me is first of all a way of expression, so i started making clothing pieces for me to wear as a form of expression. A few years later this has led me to create my fashion brand ‘Cherry and mint”

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I created my brand a few years ago, when i realised i was stuck at a 9-5 job that was not creative anymore. Cherry and mint has allowed me to combine my graphic design, sewing skills and love for fashion to create wearable art pieces that are unique and colourful, something that was missing from the Cyprus market at the time.

All textile designs for my brand are designed by me, printed onto organic textiles with Eco-friendly inks and then handmade into clothing pieces one by one in my home studio in Cyprus.

The biggest lesson i’ve learned during my small business journey so far is that you don’t have to wait for the perfect time to start doing something you love but you have to be ready to adapt and evolve. Having a small business is a huge learning curve and there are a lot of challenges you have to overcome in order to get where you want. Also you don’t have to wait until you’ve reached your goal to be proud of your self. We sometimes forget how precious and magical every step of the process is, we have to be proud of every little step and choice along the way cause it’s part of the hard work that it will get you were you are today / tomorrow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely go to one of our lovely beaches. Cyprus in summer is magical if you think that the sea side has everything you need to spend a lovely day or week just relaxing and enjoying the good weather. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shout out my friend Eleni from Sea of Lace (@seaoflacejewellery). She uses a traditional method to create amazing pieces of jewellery
