We had the good fortune of connecting with Ramona Streit and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ramona, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After 25 years in the Aerospace industry I quit and started a home care business. My brother became ill with abdomen cancer. My nephews’ came to me as I am the “go to” person in the family complaining of his home care. Upon review I realized he was not receiving the quality care he deserved. Fast forward 6 months, he passed away. I couldn’t let go that he was not treated with dignity at this stage of his life. After analyzing the aging population, diseases, and home care. I quickly realized the Baby Boomers were aging rapidly, 10,000 seniors per day turning 65. This could become a viable business that is recession proof. In the evenings I researched any company, industry, and doctor that touched a senior. After several months I quit the aerospace job and began this company in a spare bedroom of my home. I developed a marketing strategy, implemented an integrated scheduling system, created recruitment test, ads, and documents for hiring. I also created a in take document to better understand the client’s diagnosis and needs for caregiver matching. I enlisted my bookkeeper/tax preparers to assist with the Chart of Accounts for QuickBooks. 16 years later I have over 90 employees and manage a multi-million dollar company. Most importantly I have contributed to the in home care of over 1400 individuals wanting to stay in the comfort of their home. I have had the privilege to care for people of ALL ages. Why people of all ages, because my brother was not a senior. We care for children through end of life situations hourly or 24 hours. Our focus is on quality care, promoting independence, respect and dignity for all. To this day I perform all of the home assessments as I never want the phone to ring and I not know the clients we are providing care for. I know our clients and caregiver alike. They are the life of his company. Thank you for your time and interest. Ramona Streit – Owner Assistance In Home Care
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have learned not to work ‘IN” the business but to work “ON” my business. Most days are spent looking for growth opportunities, building relationships, seeking ways to improve operational excellence.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many places to visit in Los Angeles and Orange Counties. My personal favorites are hike to Hollywood sign or Laguna Canyons. Everyone must see Hollywood Blvd-Gromans Chinese Theater. If you’ve never seen the ocean a beach bike ride is wonderful. In & Out Burger always has lines and is a California favorite. Park like settings or museums such as the Huntington Library in Pasadena or Los Angeles County Art Museum are beautiful. Boyle Heights for Mexican food Pre-COVID below LA County Arts Museum Lake Arrowhead -Palm Springs – Santa Barbara – San Diego Disneyland Knott’s Berry Farm Temecula – Paso Robles – wine tasting So many cool places within a few hours
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business program – having been selected for this program allowed me to meet other business entrepreneurs and educators. The training provided helped elevate my company to the next level. The relationships I acquired through the program have been priceless. CSA – Certified Senior Advisor Organization Having no experience in senior aging issues, this organization was instrumental in helping me to understand aging issues. They are located in Colorado.
