We had the good fortune of connecting with Ray B, owner and stylist of WMBSH Styling. We’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ray, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Growing up, I have always challenged myself to do things I was never comfortable in doing. Stepping outside of the box, as the saying goes, only became easier for me in my most recent years. Creativity was not always my strong suit, but because I knew I wanted to become a master of my craft (fashion consulting/styling services) I understood that practice makes perfect.
WMBSH is a branding/styling experience that provides a vision and a safe space to express yourself with intentionality and authenticity. We provide more than a service, but an experience for all ages. With versatility being top priority, WMBSH ensures your vision to be brought to life.
In addition to stepping outside of my comfort zone and pursuing a creative career, family and friends have definitely played a vital role with the creation of WMBSH. I began styling a little over ten years ago. However, WMBSH was created just at the beginning of 2020 – when working from home became permanent for many of us. Due to my keen attention to detail, family, friends and clients trust me with their vision, allowing me to experiment beyond measure. WMBSH has made and will continue to make its mark on photoshoots, special occasions (Birthday’s, Weddings, Baby Showers), and as of recent, Independent films within the Los Angeles area.
I pursued a creative career to prove to myself that challenges are only temporary and they do not define my craft as a person. In fact, it has built my character and confidence in ways I did not imagine. My journey has just began.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
WMBSH pays homage to my father, Raymond Demetrius Wimbish Sr., whose life was taken at a young age due to gun violence back in March of 1993. Though the only memories I have of him are through pictures, I feel that his presence is forever with me. WMBSH is not only the legacy of our last name but the foundation of this styling experience.
I was born a Jr. It was not until the age of six, that with the help of my mother and grandparents I legally changed my last name, no longer carrying Wimbish. Some may ask, why the name change? Simply put, I was and still am a mama’s boy. The thought of not having my mother’s last name, after my father had passed was “scary,” especially to a six-year-old boy.
Providing authenticity, positive energy, and passion to not only my daily interactions but also within this styling experience, I created a name that was unique, powerful, and above all, a name that felt safe. WMBSH provides awe-inspiring, eye-catching, memorable experiences, where we specialize in client quality appreciation. With versatility being top priority, WMBSH ensures your vision to be brought to life.
For me, owning my own company and building my brand has not been easy, but it has been enjoyable. Enjoyable on the strength of being able to meet new people within the Los Angeles area and be of service to those who entrust me with their vision coming to life. Through the fears, self-doubt and built up anxiety, one of the lessons I have learned along the way is being patient with myself in addition to giving myself my own flowers while I am still here.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the area, for the first time, I would show them the real LA and not the tourist LA that’s shown on social media, movies and television. For brunch, my best friend and I would go to one of two places: Coffee Company or Rush Street to enjoy bottomless mimosas. Followed by a shopping trip to The Grove, enjoying a quick trip to Farmers Market for some ice cream or Sprinkles for a red velvet cupcake. Dinner, for the first night would most likely be at my grandmothers house. Home cooked meals, in my opinion, are always better than a reservation for two. The following days would then include a visit to Manhattan Beach, a sporting event at either SoFi Stadium, The Banc or Staples Center and a museum for creativity purposes: African American museum, LACMA, The Broad etc.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
In all honesty, it truly does take a village, a major shoutout to my tribe/circle of friends. During the creation of WMBSH, I contacted so many amazing folk to help build my website, proof read Client Agreements, and to really be a listening ear when I needed to vent. The genuine support from each of them has been so appreciated, that a “thank you” seems entirely too small. As I get older, I not only recognize, but I understand the true meaning of friendship and the emphasis on quality over quantity.
