We had the good fortune of connecting with Rebecca Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rebecca, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky but spent my time living in different cities in Germany, California, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee. Since I lived in different cities, I think it made me a more reminiscent person. I like to look back at my surroundings and childhood–I like to find sentimentality in everything. This is what drives my work a lot. I like to call back on fond memories or cathartic moments in life.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My work heavily revolves around memories. Even if I use specific memories from my childhood, I think there are still moments of familiarity for people and that’s the beauty of being alive. No matter how different everyone’s life is, there are shared experiences and feelings. I’m proud of how far I’ve come as an artist.
Recently, I’ve explored different mediums/practices such as printmaking and video installation and it’s something that I’d like to continue exploring. I gained a sense of confidence in my work that I’m really enjoying. I’m excited to keep working and to keep changing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Chinatown has some of the coolest buildings and gates. I would really recommend driving and just looking around. Last time I was there I took 10+ photos of different gates just because the colors were cool. From there you could drive out west and hit up Brain Dead Studios, I’ve watched a few movies in their theatre and their outdoor patio is a nice spot to hang out and grab a bite to eat. Along that street, there’s a Jon & Vinny’s, which I would recommend anyone to try out. I love their spicy fusilli and gem salad.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to give a shoutout to ArtCenter’s first ever student-run publication, Source Material! Working with Evelyn Luu, Gabby Pulgar, Maggie Lee, Reuben Merringer, and V.E.
Chen on Issue 02 was really rewarding. They were one of the best groups that I’ve ever worked with. Being an editor really allowed me to explore my interests in design and installation. I feel so grateful that I could join the team and make friends along the way!
