We had the good fortune of connecting with REKHA IYERN [Fe] and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi REKHA, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Ever since I was a child, as early as 4 or 5 years old, music and art always blew me away. For me it was the magical happy high I simply couldn’t get enough of! I would get lost in the joyous high vibrations of a favourite song or a piece of art shown to me & would put my all & beyond into it whether at home or at school. I never wanted to deviate from this truth reality of myself indulging in music and art all the way…The passion drive was crazy intense from that early age up until now. I wouldn’t ever change a thing, music and art rules my world! It’s my fuel, it is my fire, and really it’s all what I desire from my life, it simply feels like home sweet home!
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist that has always fused both music and visual art works together. I’m most proud about the fact that I’m self made and am actively trying to bring back the retro past, especially in my music. I got to where I am today by serious hard work and positive perseverance, always knowing I had something big to offer the world. Though never ever easy, ongoing meditation and hanging around like minds seemed to always help me through, having their love and enthusiastic kind support to hold on to. To practice music & art with full fire focused dedicated energy is key…it’s a way of life, often solitary though to keep doing it whether I make it to the top or not! This has truly been the person I am…realizing I was born to do only this! Somehow the cosmos always laid out the plan, the road to stay on & I always trusted the universe, my instincts…it was always clear…sunshiney-clear!
A lesson to be learned is to never give up but to also be honest with yourself, like knowing what your professional talent and strengths truly are. Taking intelligent step by step efforts to achieve the dream. To not hesitate to contact those potential vital connections…to keep at it, move on forward with confidence and high drive passion enthusiasm. I want the world to know about my music, my artworks, and how I’ve got something amazing for just about anyone in the entertainment, music & visual art industry, even the public & my fans…to have them continue to purchase my music and one of a kind art pieces. My dream goal is to hit the top, to be able to work in world renowned music studios and organizations promoting positive music and art until the end of my time. To be able to be recognized for my above the surface lyrical content, the various themes I sing about.
My goal/dream is to be working with Film and TV, or maybe even animation, or to sing on a big stage, to have my songs be heard around the world, be played here there and everywhere, or to be hired to record new material specific to the project, to exhibit/sell more of my etchings, sculptures, clothing, gifts and things to those professional clients. To solely live from music and art & then to ultimately give back to animals nature & the environment…to be part of a greater cause… I’d also love to have my own commercial studio gallery for live music and visual art exhibiting including a sanctuary for animals to also enjoy & be cared for. I’m so grateful to have music and art in my life and I just want to give back to this awesome place called planet earth.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Living Arts Centre, Whole Foods (in store buffet) at Square One, Starbucks, Downtown Oakville, Downtown Streetsville, The Burlington/Niagara Escarpment, Bronte Park and Marina, Streetsville, Mississauga Road, Lakeshore Road, Port Credit, The Distillery District in Toronto, The Toronto Harbourfront, Liberty Village, Queen Street, CN Tower, Spadina China Town, The Art Gallery of Toronto, Casa Loma, High Park, Sheridan College, Zavitz Hall at the University of Guelph, Ontario
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost it was my parents, their enthusiasm for me…they were the ones who supported me throughout my life…early on during the 70’s they enrolled me into private guitar studies for 11 years or so…that lead to being in various bands playing guitar, singing & participating in city band competitions & live television at the studio. They made sure to buy me a radio, endless cassettes and records, music books, a stereo system, music instruments and related gear. My parents gave me the basement for me to practice with my band…endless hours all amplified and mic=ed up throughout the house several times a week. My parents were also my roadies to be honest, they bought a van and went all out…at every live event trying to support my music ambition drive. Simultaneously, their were several famous bands that were like my guru masters…I wanted to be just like them…so I’d strive for exactly that, to be just like them or close to…For example, RUSH’s complex yet easy to understand music and lyrics really hit me on the head like nothing else and so I’d practice my music til I would literally drop…I’d study album covers and aim to create surreal pieces of artworks. I’d strive to be the best I could be…My guitar teacher always said: Your first impression should be a lasting one in the minds of your audience! Well, that’s where my obsession to be a rock solid musician started to boom in my brain…to be a professional guitarist/singer as to do it as perfectly as possible.
Later on during the 80’s, friends supported me, I grew up in a very artistic neighbourhood, surrounded by artists, musicians and writers on a regular basis…contact with them really sparked the flame within me & pushed me to keep making music and art. My first real music job was only at 16 years old where my friends mother who was a feminist writer got me a job with a local theatre group as a pit orchestra musician composing on the spot improvisation sound effects with guitar and voice. Soon after I landed a job as an extra actor on a famous CBC comedy series known as Hangin’ In. It was a great experience for me to be on this road, working in entertainment alongside celebrities.
Soon after, between 91-2002, while in University in Guelph, ON, Canada and in Berlin Germany, professional musicians and artists left a serious impression on me, leading me to acquire a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Methods of Printmaking. Also to pursue Art and Oratorio vocals since my interest was to sing in other languages and to up my already natural rock opera vocal abilities. Many of my student friends were also very musical & artistic, living solely from that only…their sophisticated passion drive really got me, captured my soul being and helped me to be where I am today. After that I got recognition from various musical theatre groups & bands like Cirque Du Soleil, Rent, Lion King, Andrew Lloyd Weber, A.R. Rahman, RUSH, Bob Segarini, The Headstones, National Velvet, Nick Blagona and so many more. I also participated in a Berlin art exhibition held at the famous Culture Brauerei where I showcased my original paintings, sculptures, print-making fine art etchings and live music works. I also performed at many music German, Austrian & Swiss festivals, recorded in prestigious studios and got a big taste of stardom…Fans their would scream my name and beg for more! That’s all I can tell you! I carry their energy for me deep within.
After this period it was now into the later 2000’s, I suddenly exploded on Soundcloud.com with my own music and got discovered by even more by top industry pros…I am pinching myself to say that I now work with hundreds of dedicated composers and have been fortunately blessed enough to always be in high demand to compose music for them…their deep belief and respect for me has lead me to create over 300 plus recordings in a short span of time, 2 years or so…Over the last 2 years, I have released several audio tracks, my own as well as world-collaborations consisting of multi-genre works from film soundtracks, to orchestrals, to pop, to classic & heavy rock, to alt rock, radio friendly rock, dance, sci-fi, love ballads, meditation. relaxation, children’s music and so much more, working only with the finest in so many countries, EU, Great Britain, Canada and the USA. I sing, play guitar and record multi-instrumental tracks also writing solid positive lyrics/lyrical content. Some of the names that got me here today are: Joerxworx, Peter Heckman, Colin Robinson, Delaflor, TheGat (s), Motion X, TexMex Shaman, Echo Garage, Magician, Nobs, AdmassD, BBright, Lecktric, Tom Laukemper and so many more amazingly genius composing artists that I’m so deeply honoured to say are my good friends. Some of these composers even purchase my original visual artworks or even sometimes get me to do special one of a kind designing for them. What more could I ever ask for in life! At this stage I just want to work for the top!
