Meet Rekha Menon | Contemporary Visual Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rekha Menon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rekha, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
After working in the corporate scene for more than a decade, I took the plunge to pursue my true passion…to create art that inspires! It required tremendous research, strategizing and planning, topped with a whole lot of courage, resilience and perseverance to become a full-time contemporary visual artist & ARTtrepreneur! Identifying the right market and its needs especially for my art business (e.g. workshops, merchandising, commission works, design and content writing) was key. However, I promised myself that my fine art works will grow organically with no pressure as it takes time to discover and grow into one’s own art style.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a self-taught artist who finally took the plunge to go full-time into visual arts after over a decade being a branding and media relations professional. A Malaysian artist born and based in Kuala Lumpur, I work on Pop Art pieces gravitating towards stylised figures and abstractions in my body of work. My bright and colourful palette flows with lines, shapes, patterns, symbols and shading to signify the plethora of expressions and feelings. I have always been interested in the human element, especially exploring how as multi-dimensional beings we are all connected. I tend to explore subjects that are related to emotions, inner healing, oneness and change. I believe when every person is given the right care and opportunity, there will be more empathy, kindness and understanding in this world. I hope to create art that resonates my sentiments to make a positive impact on society.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Wow! There are so many places to explore in Malaysia. Feasting on wonderful culinary delights is definitely on top of the list. I would certainly bring my friend to all my favourite restaurants, cafes and hawker places that dishes out the best mouth-watering food. We would also explore some forest reserves in the city, go for a hike, have a picnic under the canopy of trees and swim at the waterfalls. Visiting art galleries and spending hours in my favourite bookshops would be nice too. Evenings would be for us to catch sunsets, explore the night scene and watch a movie, comedy shows or go enjoy a live band playing at a local bar.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Shout out to Wesley Wong, founder of ArtiKarya, Malaysia, who tirelessly champions, educates, supports and promotes artists. A great mentor and friend but mostly a person who guides artists to thrive by emulating it himself.
