We had the good fortune of connecting with Joe Daccache and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joe, how to know whether to give up or keep going?
If ever I find myself questioning whether to keep going with something or to give up, I ask myself one question – is the thing I’m considering giving up brining me any sense of joy or purpose?
I won’t give up on anything because of certain obstacles or hard days as that is going to be a part of anything I pick up/do in life. However, having the inability to look at the bright side while experiencing those obstacles is a sign to stop what I’m doing. Nothing is permanent though – not even quitting. You’re able to give something up and if in a different season of you life you find that it makes you happy, go for it!
Growing up, I remember the words “give up” had such a bad connotation. I think quitting can be a sign of self-awareness. If I stop doing something that is stripping me from my overall peace and joy, shouldn’t that be commemorated rather than looked down upon?
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve spent so many years honing my craft and learning myself so that I can tell my story with pure authenticity. Every lyric I write, and every melody I sing comes from a place that I’ve lived in and experienced. Growing up, being gay wasn’t accepted in my culture, so I kept my inner thoughts and voice hidden for a long time. When I perform my songs, it feels like I’m letting go of all that I held in for 22 years about who I truly am and it is the most transcending feeling in the universe. I learned from my mom at a very young age that if you keep a positive mindset in anything you do, nothing can stop you from your goals. I’ve always tried to maintain that mentality, and I know that is what has gotten me through all my challenges. Currently, I’m most excited about my latest single “F.A.G.” that released this past June in honor of Pride. If there is anything I’ve learned since coming out, it’s that there is nothing more fabulous than a person living their truth; whatever that truth may be. People always want to know the brand behind my work – I say to them, there is no brand – it’s just me living my life for myself and pursuing a career that makes me happy. That is what I hope for anyone who listens to my music; is for them to be inspired to live their full truth and pursue whatever it is that brings them the most joy. Life is too short to worry, and goes too fast to hurry.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
My favorite spots (right outside of L.A.) is Zuma Beach. It’s a beach in Malibu that is so breathtaking. It’s not as busy as Santa Monica so it’s nice to go and enjoy a beach day. There’s so many good food spots to hit up there to. We would probably do brunch at a restaurant right on the beach called The Sunset Restaurant, and dinner at Malibu Seafood. Malibu Seafood has street seafood and it is out of this world. It’s also right across from the beach. We would probably get our food then go sit on the rocks by the water and enjoy our fried calamari and fries with a view.
At night, 100% we would be hitting up the West Hollywood clubs/bars. This is gay central of LA and my favorite spot is The Abbey. You’ve got half-naked men dancing on the table and and incredible drinks .- what more could you ask for? ]
There are so many cool hikes in LA, but favorites are Wildwood Canyon and Runyon. Afterwards, we would definitely be stopping at Nature Wells for an Acai bowl. Also, you’re in LA so we definitely gotta go get poke (plenty of good spots for that and I love almost all of them).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom has been a rock for me in every step of my path, be it my career or personal life. She’s witnessed the wins and the losses in all aspects of my life, but has continued to motivate me to keep going and be the best that I can be. I owe it all to her and to the rest of my amazing family.
