We had the good fortune of connecting with Rey Paez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rey, why did you pursue a creative career?
All my life I’ve had a love for illustration. From cartoons to comic books. It’s always been a big love of mine. There was a time I tried to pursue a career in print technology and graphic designs but I just didn’t have the interest in it. During my time in school I met some friends that were making a living as full time artists and I thought to myself now that’s what I’d love to do. Once I gave it a shot I knew it was the career path for me. I think it’s important to have a passion and love for what you do.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well I’m an illustrator and the thing that sets me apart from others would have to be my style. I’d like to think when some one sees my work they know I drew it even without seeing the signature lol There are a lot of factors that got me to where I am today. For example the support of my family and my friends, my passion for what I do, developing my own illustration style and a whole lot of other reasons. lol It for sure hasn’t been easy and I still struggle but at the end of the day it’s my passion so I wouldn’t want to do anything else. I think when you truly love the thing you are doing all the negatives about it are worth it. The love and the passion for your craft is what stands out. I’ve learned so much along the way it’s hard to narrow it down lol Id say one of the biggest lessons is learning how to budget my money (I’m still learning lol). From saving money to personal expenses to putting money aside for products I’m creating and selling. Those were all things I never thought about really. It’s still a struggle but I’m getting there lol I’d like for people to know me for my work and that I do it cause I truly love it and do it cause I hope it brings some kind of joy to them.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well most of my itinerary would consist of places to eat haha. I’m more of a list kinda guy so I’d make a list of spots I’d want to take him for some good food. For example tatsu ramen in LA, howlen Rey’s, boiling crab, egg slut and many more places that I can’t think of right now lol. I’d for sure go to a museum like lacma and the la brea tar pits cause I’m a sucker for that stuff. Also I’d have to throw in some amusement parks like Disneyland knotts berry farm and universal studios. I think all of that would give us more then enough things to do for about a week or so.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Friends and family
