We had the good fortune of connecting with Richard McWhorter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Richard, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
This has been one of the hardest parts of my life to “balance.” Work-life balance is very difficult. Not only does it depend on the needs of your family and friends, but also on the needs of your clients and business. Decisions need to be handled with deep thought and care to make sure both sides have their needs being met. It’s a consistent work in progress but greatly rewarding when balance is aligned.

What should our readers know about your business?
My “super power” has been the attribute of being willing to fail. I have tried so many different ways of building my business and making what I do better. I always look at failure as learning lessons and therefore my best lessons have come from these efforts.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Golf would definitely be involved. I’d also plan one or two nice dinners which there are a large swatch of great restaurants in Los Angeles. Poker may be involved as I do enjoy the game. But, I prefer sitting in my backyard with friends and talking for hours about random topics without any pressure of having to end the evening.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There were so many persons that I was fortunate enough to come across and, in some cases, get to know who showed me what to do and what not to do in my career. I remember around 1999, I wanted to get out of my business, but my manager told me to pause and give it some time. He encouraged me to find a way to revamp myself – and so I started reading. As I read, the more I understood there was so much out there that I didn’t know. I started asking “why”. One of my favorite books is Hans Roslings’ “Factfulness” because it teaches you to think critically. That’s a powerful book and one that I would give a shoutout if I had to choose.
