We had the good fortune of connecting with Rika “Purotu” Morningstar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rika, how does your business help the community or world?
My business helps support small village industries in Bali, specifically supporting women artisans. 10-50% of the proceeds from the sales of each product go to charities in Bali and Kalimantan to help support education with indigenous children and opening up schools for them in Kalimantan call “Sekolah Adat”, helps provide clean drinking water filters throughout Indonesia through “Social Impact”, help feed poverty stricken people with disabilities and provide medical care through “Solemen Yayasan Indonesia”. We donate to various causes that we feel will help the community and goes to people who need it. This is my goal to give back to the world and our community.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My background is in the Fine Arts where I graduated in Painting from the Kansas City Art Institute. I always loved creating, writing, designing and dancing. Being creative is just a big part of me and I have to stay creative to stay balanced in life. But being an Artist has never been easy especially when you have to market your work as well. I never had a office job so luckily my passions were too strong not to do. I have always felt supported by others in my art my entire life actually. But financially it had it’s ups and downs. Sometimes I had to have multiple jobs to support myself like teaching and waitressing in my younger years. But luckily I worked very hard in my life and built everything from scratch. I stay open to changes as well and don’t do just one thing creatively. This is how I was able to survive as an artist. A lot of the art that I created is inspired by the beautiful island cultures of Polynesia and Indonesia. Place of my birth and ancestry and Polynesia through the dances and music which inspire everything I do in life to my clothing, costumes, writing and painting. Culture, dance and art are everything to me.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I currently live in Bali, so I would say I would bring her to Bali and go to Lovina and Buleleng to visit the waterfalls, take a boat out to snorkel Menjangan island and take a boat out to see the dolphins as well. We would treck Mount Batur at Sunrise and visit the Besakih temple in Karangasem. We would watch the sunset with a coconut in Canggu beach and go visit Uluwatu for their beautiful beaches and crystal blue waters and watch the big wave surfers do their thing. Also go eat freshly caught grilled fish in Jimbaran Bay at sunset. The airport is 20 minutes from there so that could be the end of the trip. A perfect and productive week in Bali!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to recognize and say thanks to my best friend Ayanna who has always been supportive in following my dreams. She inspires me by her words and actions and always lifts me up when I’m down. I can share anything with her and she never judges but only listens and gives her support. I would also like to thank my Mom Suryati for her love and support. She has always been there for me through thick and thin. Thirdly, I would like to thank Sara Eaglewoman who has been my spiritual teacher for over 20 years and has helped transform my life to live my dreams and my fullest potential. These 3 women have truly been there for me no matter what and I feel so blessed to have them in my life.
