We had the good fortune of connecting with Riku Campo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Riku, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
Leaving my home country Finland to pursue my dream.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I had always been interested in makeups . I was a a child actor in Finland and I remember looking at actors doing their makeups in the dressing rooms and I just loved the way they transformed themselves into a characters. When I was 18 it was time to decide whether I wanna become an actor or a makeup artist . I chose the beauty business. I went to the only beauty school in Helsinki and after 3 months I quit because I didn’t believe that there are strict rules in makeup artistry as it was at that time , late 80’s. I used Vaseline and eyeshadows to create my own lipsticks and blushes and it was too much for the teachers. But I have always been a fighter ! After the Next day I quit the school , I got hired as a demonstration makeup artist for Stendhal Paris skincare and makeup brand . I did makeups at the department stores around Finland and that was my real makeup school! I really learned how to apply makeups for women 30-70+ who were the customers of Stendhal’s. After view years of doing that , it was time to move on: I started to create my own beauty editorials and sold my ideas to Finnish fashion magazines. I loved to create editorials, fantasies and stories. I love film history and I got lots of inspirations from old movies. But also theater is still very important for me. I like drama in my editorials: it creates a tension that can be remembered better than just a plain Jane image . I am an image maker. I love to create my shoots from the very beginning to the end. I am a bit perfectionist but I also aloud myself and my team to play around without too much thinking and be creative , because then you can really create something magical . Something more unique . I did my 1st makeup book in 2006 for Otava Publisher in Finland , the 2nd one in 2010 For Simon&Schuster USA and now 10 Years later for HarperCollins. I have so many ideas for a new book now…I already have planned my 4th book already ! What makes me stand out and be different ? It is hard to say because I don’t ever compare myself to anyone else. But probably my honesty of everything. And I believe in kindness . It reveals beauty. I want to make people laugh! Beauty industry should be also fun . And I like fun!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love everything and anything by the ocean . By the beach . I would take them an early power walking by the Santa Monica beach at 6 am ! Wake up! And then delicious healthy breakfast at the Urth Cafe on Main St. This is my daily routine quite often, anyway. I love the dinner at the Shutters Santa Monica : outside on the patio . Good food and wine. Then Catalina Island trip with snorkeling and relaxing …reading books on the beach! Most of my friends who visit me want to see art shows , so all the museums and galleries are must.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
