We had the good fortune of connecting with Riri Tamura and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Riri, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued my creative career as a Designer and Art Director because ever since I can remember as a child, I always was either drawing or doing something related to art. Growing up, I was surrounded by creative individuals. My grandfather is an oil painter and taught as a professor at an art university in Japan. My aunt, who also lives in Japan, is a crafter where she sells hand painted goods. With my visual arts background, I soon fell in love with the design world.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Growing up with creative individuals, it definitely influenced my career that I have today. I took art classes for 10 years between middle school and high school. From there, I studied Graphic Design at Chapman University where I had the opportunity to intern at various places. I had a hard time deciding what kind of career path I wanted to go into with my design career, but with these internships, I soon realized I wanted to work in an agency setting amongst other creatives. Upon graduating in 2019, I managed to land an internship that turned into a full time position at an advertising agency as a Designer. Currently, I am working as a Junior Art Director at TBWA\Chiat\Day LA, based in Los Angeles, CA. Working with award winning creatives made me realize my passion for creating impactful work to influence society. My experience in advertising has definitely made me a better creative with the help of great mentors and ignited passion in using my creativity for good.

Apart from my full-time job, I love experimenting with other mediums. Recently with the pandemic, I found my love for hand lettering and typography. I also enjoy pursuing both digital and film photography during my free time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my best friend was visiting the area, I would love to show them around Los Angeles, CA. Whenever I am in the area, I love visiting the Arts District in Downtown LA. It’s a fun little historic area with different places to eat and shops to look at. Weekends are especially fun in LA with different events going on like the Melrose Trading Post or attending gallery walks. For eating and drinking, my favorite place to go is Sawtelle where I love to indulge in my favorite ramen spots.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
