Meet Risanta Xiaodan Li | Film Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Risanta Xiaodan Li and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Risanta Xiaodan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My career journey has been filled with challenges, a seemingly inevitable part of everyone’s life journey. From being a dreamer who traveled across the globe to the United States in pursuit of a film dream, to completing my master’s degree, and then stepping into the professional world, every step was laced with uncertainty and challenges. However, it was these very challenges that ignited my passion for overcoming obstacles. The impact of the pandemic on everyone’s career was unprecedented. Facing massive layoffs and an economic crisis, everyone felt uneasy, including recent graduates like myself. In this context, I was compelled to rethink my career path. As a freelance producer, I was involved in the production of various types of films, commercials, and web series, which laid a solid foundation for me. Based on this experience and confidence, I founded my own production company—Loomlight Production. As a startup, we undoubtedly face even greater challenges, but this represents a pivotal turning point in my career. I am full of confidence in our future and look forward to welcoming more individuals who are passionate about filmmaking to join us. I believe that as long as we work together, the path ahead will be even brighter.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m Risanta Li, a graduate of Chapman University’s Master of Film Producting and the owner of Loomlight Production. Over the past five years, I’ve worked on a diverse range of projects, spanning from short films to feature films, commercials, web series, and documentaries. My reputation is built on my ability to thrive in diverse creative and professional environments. I’ve honed my skills across various genres and formats, seamlessly transitioning between different roles throughout the filmmaking process.
One of my proudest qualities is my aptitude for rapid learning. I often tackle most challenges in filmmaking independently, swiftly acquiring and applying new knowledge to overcome obstacles. A prime example of this is my thesis project, “The Tree.” Despite being a low-budget short film, its quality remained uncompromised, even earning qualification for the Cleveland International Film Festival.
In addition to my expertise as a producer, I’m also an enthusiastic learner, constantly exploring different aspects of production. This includes tasks such as crowdfunding planning, script analysis, casting, and production design during pre-production. I’ve delved deep into the intricacies of lighting setups for film photography teams and expanded my learning to post-production, encompassing editing, graphic design, and music composition.
My dedication to continued education strengthens my relationships within teams. I prioritize understanding their areas of expertise, enhancing our communication and collaboration. Known for my versatility and adaptability, I eagerly embrace new challenges and consistently deliver high-quality results across a wide range of projects.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

With hearts full of memories and promises to return, we’d bid farewell to Laguna Beach and start planning our next adventure together.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I owe a lot to the people who’ve supported and opened doors for me along the way—friends, family, and mentors. If I had to single out one person, it’d be my dad. Since I was a kid, I’ve been a bit of a dreamer, earning myself the nickname ‘neighborhood adventurer’ from those around me. Distinguishing between fantasy in the screen and reality was always a bit tricky for me, so my journey has been a mix of imagination and exploration.
To help me understand the world behind the screen, my dad had a plan—he took me to a film set and gently brought me back to earth. He shattered my belief in movie magic, but it sparked a deep passion for filmmaking in me. To fuel my love for movies, my dad showed me various film scenes, marking my first steps into the captivating world of cinema.
That visit kick-started my cinematic dreams, and from then on, it felt like I spent my entire childhood glued to the TV and movie screens.
